The Broncos are dealing with their first set of training camp injury issues.

Rookie receiver KJ Hamler has been shut down with a hamstring injury, inside linebacker Todd Davis needed to be helped off the field Thursday morning because of a calf issue and outside linebacker Von Miller and running back Melvin Gordon were held out of most of practice because of elbow and rib injuries, respectively.

Hamler, a second-round draft pick from Penn State, was expected to start the season as the Broncos’ third receiver and possible punt returner, but this injury, which is especially tricky for a player who relies on his speed to make plays, will undoubtedly set him back.

“KJ has been trying to work through (the hamstring problem) and he hasn’t been able to do it and he’ll be on the shelf for a couple of weeks,” coach Vic Fangio said.

If 2 to 3 weeks is the conservative estimate, it puts Hamler’s status in doubt for the Sept. 14 opener against Tennessee.

Hamler’s absence will create more practice reps at receiver for the group of DaeSean Hamilton, Fred Brown and rookie Tyrie Cleveland, among others.

Davis was having his calf injury evaluated, a source said, but no other update was immediately available.

Davis went down during an 11on-11 play. He required two trainers to help him off the field and he received a cart ride back to the locker room/trainer’s room entrance of the facility. Josey Jewell replaced Davis for the final period of practice.

Davis sustained a calf injury in a July 18, 2019, training camp practice and didn’t play until Sept. 22 at Green Bay, missing the first two regular-season games. He still led the Broncos with a career-high 134 tackles. He is in the final year of his contract.

Miller and Gordon were taken out of practice as a precaution, a source said.

“Von tweaked his elbow so we pulled him out and Melvin tweaked his ribs so we pulled him out, too,” Fangio said.
