Rain extends Yankees layoff, postpones return of Judge, Acuña
ATLANTA » The New York Yankees are having to sit out another day, this time because of the weather.
Rain in Atlanta forced a postponement of the Braves’ game against the Yankees, delaying the debut of Ian Anderson and the return of Aaron Judge and Ronald Acuña Jr. from the injured list.
The Yankees were eager to get back on the field after their threegame Subway Series against the New York Mets was postponed because of coronavirus concerns.
Now, the Yankees will have to wait until a Wednesday doubleheader at Truist Park, which would mean a six-day layoff since their last game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Contrast that with what’s coming up: three doubleheaders over a five-day span.
“That’s 2020, baby,” New York manager Aaron Boone said. “We’ve got to figure it out. It’s a challenge.”
Angels-Astros game postponed as Laura approaches. HOUSTON» The Houston Astros’ game against the Los Angeles Angels that was scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed until next month because of Hurricane Laura.The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 5 in Anaheim. Los Angeles will be the home team for the first game of the doubleheader and the Astros will be the home team for the second game, which is the rescheduled game.
Indians’ Francona also dealing with blood clotting issue. CLEVEL A ND» The Indians may be without manager Terry Francona even longer than expected. Francona has missed 15 games with a gastrointestinal issue, and Chris Antonetti, the team’s president of baseball operations, disclosed that the 61-year-old manager has also been dealing with blood clotting problems. Antonetti said doctors inserted a stent last week to help Francona’s blood flow “around what was a clogged filter in his veins.”
Clevinger back with Indians after demotion. The CLEVEL A ND» Indians are ready to give starter Mike Clevinger another chance — and the ball. Cleveland will recall Clevinger to pitch Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins for the time since he and teammate Zach Plesac broke team rules and Major League Baseball COVID-19 protocols and were demoted for their behavior.
