Thank you to the COGCC

-

Broomfield has worked hard to protect our health and safety from the negative impacts of fracking for years: in 2013 we passed a moratorium; in 2017 our Citizen Initiative Charter Amendment 301 for Health and Safety First passed; in 2018, 55% of Broomfielders voted for Proposition 112’ s 2,500- foot setbacks; and Broomfield residents and elected officials worked relentlessly to help pass Senate Bill

19- 181 to finally “untie our hands” from outdated state pre- emptions.

Extraction started fracking in 2019 with Broomfield residents paying the price with benzene releases, destruction of our public open spaces, 24/ 7 noise exceeding legal limits, breathing difficulties, and awful chemical odors. Additionally, Colorado’s fracking is a significant contributor to greenhouse gases and climate change.

The passage of SB 181 completely changed the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission’s ( COGCC) mission, which had historically fostered oil and gas development. State law now requires COGCC to protect and prioritize our public health, safety, welfare, the environment, and wildlife.

COGCC is now entrenched in updating its rules and regulations. As you can imagine, implementing such a substantial paradigm shift has its challenges. The industry is applying immense pressure to continue with the old status quo leniency.

I was so relieved when the commission stood up to the industry by moving toward a 2,000foot setback from well sites to occupied structures. Thank you, commissioners, for taking such courageous action to protect us, our children and our future.
