HAMILTON CLINCHES RECORD 7TH F1 TITLE

After winning a difficult race to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of seven Formula One championsh­ips on Sunday, the hardest thing for Lewis Hamilton was containing his emotions.

His voice could be heard breaking as he thanked his team over the radio moments after crossing the line at the Turkish Grand Prix, while underneath the helmet the tears were starting to build up.

“All these emotions were running through me and I was trying to stop it,” Hamilton said in his post- race news conference. “I was thinking about my whole career, from when I was five when I drove in a go- kart, from when we won the British championsh­ip, driving home with my dad and singing ‘ We Are The Champions’ and dreaming of being here.”

Moments after victory No. 94 and title No. 7, he sat in his car with his head in his hands.

• Joan Mir won the MotoGP title for the first time with a seventh- place finish at the Valencia Grand Prix on Sunday. Pole- sitter Franco Morbidelli won the race, but it was not enough to keep Mir from securing the title with one race to go. The finale will take place in Portugal next week.

Thiem, Nadal win opening matches at ATP Finals.

LONDON » Dominic Thiem outlasted Stefanos Tsitsipas in a rematch of the 2019 final, beating the defending champion 7- 6 ( 5), 4- 6, 6- 3 Sunday in the opening singles match of the tournament inside a largely empty O2 Arena.

In the late match, Rafael Nadal had a much easier time against newcomer Andrey Rublev, beating the Russian 6- 3, 6- 4 in just 1 hour, 17 minutes.

Tournament­s relocated to Melbourne.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA » The Australian Open and all the regular interstate leadup tournament­s for the season’s first tennis major will be staged in Melbourne in January in a bid to minimize risks for players traveling and quarantini­ng during the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Tennis Australia will transfer the tournament­s from Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart to Melbourne, where a quarantine and practice hub will be set up for the sport’s elite players.

Cavs guard arrested on weapons charges.

CLEVELAND » The Cleveland Cavaliers said they have spoken to guard Kevin Porter Jr. following his arrest early Sunday on weapons possession. Porter, a 2019 first- round draft pick, faces charges of improperly handling firearms in a vehicle, according to Mahoning County sheriff records. He was released on $ 4,000 bond.

US women’s soccer to play on Nov. 27.

CHICAGO » The world champion U. S. women’s soccer team will resume play with an exhibition against the Netherland­s at Breda on Nov. 27, a rematch of last year’s World Cup final. The Americans have not played since beating Japan 3- 1 on March 11 to win the SheBelieve­s Cup.

Packers’ Bakhtiari agrees to contract extension.

GREEN BAY, WIS. » Green Bay Packers offensive lineman David Bakhtiari has agreed to a contract extension that will keep the Pro Bowl left tackle off the free- agent market in the offseason. Bakhtiari’s agent, Mark Humenik, confirmed that his client had agreed to a fouryear deal worth up to $ 105.5 million with a $ 30 million signing bonus.

Boeheim positive for virus. SYRACUSE, N. Y. » Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim has tested positive for the novel coronaviru­s, and the Orange have paused all team activities. Boeheim, 75, said in a statement that he is not experienci­ng any symptoms.
