MLB sUsPenDs mets’ Canó FOR 162 games New York Giants fire offensive line coach. Panthers say McCaffrey not expected to play against Lions.

NEW YORK » Mets second baseman Robinson Canó was suspended for 162 games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday after he tested positive for a performance- enhancing drug for the second time in his decorated career.

The 38- year- old Canó will miss the entire 2021 season and lose $ 24 million in salary. The eight- time All- Star hit a robust .316 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in this year’s pandemicshortened season.

Minus Canó, New York could move good- hitting Jeff McNeil into a regular spot at second base. The suspension also will surely prompt calls by Mets fans to sign free agent DJ LeMahieu, an AL MVP candidate this year with the Yankees.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N. J. » The New York Giants have fired offensive line coach Marc Colombo.

Coach Joe Judge announced the stunning move on Wednesday without an explanation. Veteran line coach Dave DeGuglielmo will finish the season running the line.

A person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press that Judge wanted to hire DeGuglielmo as a consultant to work with the offensive line and other parts of the team.

Judge told Colombo about the plans this week and the former Dallas Cowboys lineman voiced his displeasure, the person said. It ended with the firing on Wednesday.

CHARLOTTE, N. C. » Panthers coach Matt Rhule said running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, a big blow for a Carolina team that is looking to snap a five- game losing streak.

While Rhule said he expects McCaffrey will play again this season, he doesn’t know when. He said the 2019 All- Pro’s return is largely up to his doctors on when the running back is cleared medically to return.

Chargers’ Herbert attracts attention for new haircut.

COSTA MESA, CALIF. » When Justin Herbert looks back at his rookie season with the Los Angeles Chargers, his biggest mistake might not be any of the interceptions or a fourth- quarter play he would like to have back. It could very well be allowing a strength and conditioning coach to cut his hair.

Herbert displayed a new haircut during his weekly availability Wednesday, shedding his wavy locks for a buzzcut. It didn’t take long for the reviews to flow in on social media. Comments ranged from people posting their worst haircut pictures to how much younger it made the

22- year old Herbert look.
