Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey announced via Twitter Tuesday that he has entered the transfer portal.

“After struggling with this decision for weeks, I have decided to enter the transfer portal and explore my options,” the former Valor Christian High School standout tweeted. “I am thankful for the support Nebraska fans have shown me. I have so much love for my coaches and teammates from my time here. I am excited for the future.”

As a redshirt freshman for Nebraska in 2020, he completed 48 of 76 passes for 466 yards and a touchdown. He also had 65 carries for 364 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Prior to the start of the season, he lost a bid for the starting job to Adrian Martinez.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder was listed as a four-star recruit by 247Sports and ESPN, and three-star by Rivals. He received a bevy of Division I offers in high school, including ones from Colorado and Colorado State.

He is the son of former Broncos receiver and current Northern Colorado head football coach Ed McCaffrey.

He is the younger brother of former NFL receiver Max McCaffrey, Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey and former Michigan Wolverines quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, who officially entered the transfer portal last Friday.

Two of McCaffrey’s Husker teammates also entered the portal this week — backup offensive lineman Will Farniok and receiver Kade Warner, son of Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.

The Huskers’ top playmaker, receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, entered the portal after the season and announced his transfer to Kentucky the same week.

The departure of McCaffrey leaves Nebraska with three scholarship quarterbacks, Martinez and freshmen Logan Smothers and Heinrich Haarberg.
