Love or hate his policies, Trump unfit for presidency

- David Anderson, Colorado Springs

“Casting my vote for policy,” Jan. 27 letter to the editor

I believe the letter writer’s comments that his reason for voting for Trump was based on policies he supports, and he was willing to overlook many character flaws that would otherwise be disqualifying.

I also believe there are many potential Republican candidates who are intelligent, honest, ethical, and brave who support and endorse these very same policies — candidates who do not lie nonstop (from small lies about crowd size to big lies about election fraud) and incite unstable mobs to storm the Capitol in an effort to destroy our republic.

I sincerely hope that he finds and supports such a candidate because now we know that any vote for Trump is a vote against democracy.

What Trump policy ignored: control of a pandemic and a united response to end it; help for small businesses and their now unemployed staff; efforts to diminish the hate and division in this nation; direct actions to improve quality of life for the poor and the long-ignored working class through higher wages and job retraining; improvement in pay for teachers and the quality of our nation’s public educational system; improvement of race relations (including the elimination of criminal treatment of migrants and refugees); the right of every person to affordable health care; and that “socialism” is public infrastructure, fire and police, social security and Medicare, and national safety nets (with huge holes yet to be filled). All of these address human rights embodied in our Constitution.

The letter writer fails to understand that investment in renewable energy technologies will boost our economy and improve trade imbalances and that

Trump himself is a swamp creature whose recent pardons focused on financial fraudsters — criminals that he considers to be his peers.

Yes, it’s all a matter of priorities, and those of the letter writer reveal a misunderstanding of the issues facing America.
