RAPIDS’ LEWIS SCORES TWICE IN U.S. WIN OVER TRINIDAD

ORLANDO, FLA.» Jesús Ferreira scored his first two internatio­nal goals and had three assists, and Paul Arriola and Jonathan Lewis scored twice each to power the United States over a rusty Trinidad and Tobago 7-0 in an exhibition on Sunday night.

Lewis, a Colorado Rapid, scored his first internatio­nal goal, as did Miles Robinson.

Coming off a 6-2 win over Panama in November with top American players and a 6-0 rout of El Salvador last month with a group mostly from Major League Soccer, the U.S. outshot the Soca Warriors 19-2 and scored five goals in three straight games for the first time. Three Americans had not scored two goals each since an 8-1 rout of the Cayman Islands in a 1993 friendly led by JoeMax Moore, Dominic Kinnear and Mark Chung.

Dylan McCaffrey joining dad at UNC. Former Michigan and Valor High School quarterbac­k Dylan McCaffrey announced on social media he plans to transfer to Northern Colorado, where his dad is the head coach. In a Twitter post on Sunday night, McCaffrey wrote: “Extremely honored to announce I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at The University of Northern Colorado. Go Bears!!”

McCaffrey threw for 242 career yards and three touchdowns as a backup at Michigan. He chose not to return to the Wolverines for a fourth year.

Bronco great Ed McCaffrey was hired by Northern Colorado on Dec. 12, 2019. He has yet to coach a game because of the pandemic.

Downhill champion Goggia breaks bone in her knee. Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia will miss the world championsh­ips in February after breaking a bone in her right knee on Sunday.

The Italian ski federation said Goggia fell while skiing down to the valley with other competitor­s after a World Cup super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirc­hen, Germany, was postponed until Monday because of fog.

England’s Football Associatio­n vowed to work with the British government and social media platforms to tackle racism after a spate of incidents involving Premier League players from Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United being targeted by online abuse.

Rangers waive DeAngelo. NEW YORK» The slumping New York Rangers placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on waivers Sunday, one day after he struggled in a 5-4 overtime loss to Pittsburgh.

DeAngelo, 25 and in his fifth NHL season, was on ice for four of the Penguins’ goals in that defeat. He also was benched by coach David Quinn earlier this season for a third-period unsportsma­nlike conduct penalty and complainin­g loudly to the referees after drawing a holding penalty.
