Lew Krausse, who started Brewers’ inaugural game, dies at 77.

Lew Krausse, who pitched 12 years in the major leagues and started the first game in Milwaukee Brewers history, has died. He was 77.

Chad Krausse, Lew’s youngest son, said his father died Tuesday of complications from cancer while in hospice care in Kansas City.

Krausse was 68-91 with 21 saves and a 4.00 ERA during a big league career that began in 1961 and ended in 1974. He pitched the first three innings and took the loss when the Brewers fell to the California Angels on April 7, 1970.

Scott Oberg is in a good place and has plans to keep it that way.

The Rockies’ right-handed reliever, who will compete with right-hander Daniel Bard for the role of closer, said he’s had “no hiccups” since undergoing thoracic outlet surgery in September. The procedure was an attempt to prevent the return of bloodclots in his right arm, an ailment that has sidelined him three times in his career, including last year.

“The thought process is just to continue to progress and continue to up the intensity and work my way into games,” Oberg said Thursday as pitchers and catcher had their first workouts of spring training at Salt River Fields in

Scottsdale, Ariz.

Oberg was excellent in 2019, posting a 2.25 ERA, limiting opponents to a .196 batting average and giving up zero homers at Coors Field. He went 5-0 with four saves and a 1.71 ERA in 28 games in LoDo. He missed the entire 2020 season.

Oberg said that doctors and Rockies trainers will continue to monitor his health and he’ll get ultrasound tests on the arm throughout the season to measure the bloodflow in his arm.

Rox brothers. Oberg revealed that he’s joined outfielder Ian Desmond and shortstop Trevor Story as leaders to talk to teammates in the wake of the blockbuster Nolan Arenado trade to St. Louis.

“You never want to see a clubhouse go 25, 26 different directions,” Oberg said. “We wanted to make sure that (we) reiterated some of the team goals, some of the team values. You know, ‘Hey look, we lost one of our brothers. We lost one of our guys. But we still have jobs to do.’ ”

Cactus League tickets. Although fans will not be allowed to watch spring training workouts this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the plan at Salt River Fields is to open the ballpark to 17% capacity (about 2,200 fans) when Cactus League games begin on Feb. 28 between the Rockies and Diamondbacks.

Tickets for individual games go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. For more information, visit mlb.com/rockies/ tickets/spring-training.
