Buffs bound for WNIT

The Colorado women’s basketball team is heading back to the postseason.

On Monday, the Buffaloes (1010) were left out of the 64-team field for the NCAA Tournament, but they were selected for the 32-team Women’s NIT.

The WNIT will be held at four different regional sites — Charlotte, N.C.; Fort Worth, Texas; Memphis, Tenn.; and Rockford, Ill. The semifinals and finals will be held in Memphis, with the championship game scheduled for March 28.

The Buffs had hoped for an invitation to the NCAA Tournament, but were on the bubble, sitting at No. 52 in the NET rankings. Despite being left out, they have earned a postseason trip for the first time since 2017.

CU was expected to get a WNIT invitation in 2020, as well, but the tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will be CU’s seventh appearance at the WNIT and second under head coach JR Payne. The Buffs are 14-6 all-time in the event, including 6-0 in the first round.
