Were Broncos out-foxed by young Shanahan?

Making moves. As a Broncos fan, I’m very envious of San Francisco trading up for the No. 3 pick in the NFL draft. Niners coach Kyle Shanahan is one of the best offensive minds in the game and now he can draft a top quarterback to develop, while having the benefit of veteran Jimmy Garoppolo to keep the seat warm. It seems very similar to the Kansas City Chiefs’ strategy when they paired coach Andy Reid with veteran Alex Smith and rookie Patrick Mahomes.

Jeromie, has seen this movie

Kiz: Young Shanahan and our old friend John Lynch almost won Super Bowl LIV before Mahomes stole the Lombardi Trophy from them in the fourth quarter. The Niners braintrust knows: It don’t mean a thing unless you have that QB bling.

Go for two? Well, the No. 3 pick in the first round gets you what? If Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is No. 1 and Brigham Young quarterback Zach Wilson goes at No. 2, then who is Shanahan’s target? If Shanahan is bold he will trade up one more slot for the New York Jets’ pick. Or the Broncos could do the same.

Kiz: It would shock me if either San Francisco or Denver can persuade the Jets to give up the No. 2 pick. Are we absolutely certain that Lawrence and Wilson are the top two QBs in this draft, though? Way back in 2004, Eli Manning and Philip Rivers were off the board after four selections in the first round. Manning and Rivers had distinguished careers. But with the 11th pick in the 2004 draft, Pittsburgh took some guy named Ben Roethlisberger.

One that got away. Has anybody mentioned the Broncos should have hired Shanahan instead of Vance Joseph?

Brent, Denver

Kiz: Nobody has ever accused the staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters of being good at math. So we lost count at about the 465,112th time somebody suggested to us that Son of Shanny would’ve been a better choice by John Elway than the Leader of Men. Full confession: I was a knucklehead for believing Joseph was ready to be a head coach in the NFL. But I also stubbornly maintain that it would’ve been a dumb idea for Kyle to take a job in his father’s town, where unfair comparisons between dad and son would’ve loomed over every threegame losing streak.

Open for business. Kiz, I don’t think you understand how the Nuggets went all in with the trade for Aaron Gordon because of the Los Angeles Lakers’ health issues. Had the Lakers been rolling, I doubt this move gets done by Denver.

Kiz: Opportunity doesn’t knock twice. Kudos to Nuggets executive Tim Connelly for taking bold action to kick down the door. Is there a super team in the NBA this year? No. And that no doubt played a role in Denver’s aggressive pursuit of Gordon. I asked Connelly if the championship race was wide open. He responded: “I think there’s a lot of teams that have the ability to go win it all, and I like to think we’re one of them.”

Clown comment, bro. And today’s parting shot seems to confuse a press credential with pom-pons.

Why is it that you hate the Broncos so much, clown?
