LEGENDARY COACH SCHNELLENB­ERGER DIES AT AGE 87

Howard Schnellenb­erger, who built the offense for the 1972 Miami Dolphins’ unbeaten Super Bowl champions, then revived downtrodde­n football programs as head coach at the Universiti­es of Miami and Louisville, died on Saturday. He was 87.

His death was announced by Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, whose football program he had created. The university did not say where he died or give the cause.

Brash and supremely confident and a distinctiv­e figure on the sidelines, usually wearing a sports jacket and tie and sporting a bushy mustache, Schnellenb­erger was eager to defy the odds. “Football is the last place, outside of the military, where we have an opportunit­y to develop the propositio­n that the team is more important than the individual,” he told Sports Illustrate­d in 1995.

Thunder’s Horford to remain inactive for rest of season.

OKLAHOMA CITY» The Thunder said veteran center Al Horford will remain inactive for the rest of the season as the team’s young talent develops. Horford, 34, averaged 14.2 points and 6.7 rebounds this season. The five-time All-Star will remain with the team and train, but he will not travel.

Luke Voit, the New York Yankees’ first baseman and the major league home run champion last season, will miss at least the first month of the season to undergo knee surgery.

Chen wins 3rd straight world title.

STOCKHOLM» Nathan Chen became the first American since Scott Hamilton to win a third consecutiv­e World Figure Skating Championsh­ips men’s title. The 21-year-old Chen outskated two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. And Chen believes he has been — and can be — even better. “I wouldn’t say this is my best free program ever,” he said.

Draw, not win, angers Ronaldo.

BELGRADE, SERBIA» Cristiano Ronaldo stormed off after he failed to score as Portugal was held to a 2-2 draw by Serbia — though TV replays indicated he did put the ball over the line — while top-ranked Belgium could only salvage a 1-1 draw in the Czech Republic in their World Cup qualifying matches. Luxembourg pulled off the biggest shock by beating Ireland 1-0.

Red Sox closer has COVID-19. Boston Red Sox closer Matt Barnes has tested positive for COVID-19 and won’t be ready for opening day. Manager Alex Cora said that Barnes is asymptomat­ic.

Utah hires Craig Smith.

SALT LAKE CITY» Craig Smith, the former Colorado State assistant coach who quickly turned Utah State into one of the nation’s best mid-major programs, was hired as Utah’s basketball coach.
