As Colorado educators and parents work to address the impact of lost learning time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one company is offering the state’s students free virtual tutoring in subject areas of their choice.

Schoolhouse. world, a nonprofit started by the founder of the online Khan Academy, recently partnered with the Colorado Education Initiative to launch free tutoring services in the state. The platform currently offers small group lesson for middle and high school math classes, such as pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and statistics, as well as SAT preparation.

Tutoring is limited to students age 13 and up, but the company hopes to expand to additional grades levels and subject areas soon, according to a release.

Schoolhouse. world launched in early 2020 after the pandemic thrust online education into global demand. Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, said that while his first platform is optimal for asynchronous learning, he wanted to develop one that focused on bringing human connection to the digital learning experience.

“About a year ago, I started working with some folks to say, let’s build a platform where students can say what they need help in and they can be connected to high quality, vetted folks from around the world who can run high quality, vetted tutoring sessions with them,” Khan said in a video announcement.

Interested students can sign up at Schoolhouse.world and fill out a survey about their academic needs to gain access to sessions. The platform is also accepting tutors, who can sign up at the same link.
