How CHSAANOW Top 10 teams fared

CLASS 5A

1. Valor Christian (1-0) won at No. 6 Regis Jesuit, 24-6. Colton Allen sandwiched a pair of first-half touchdown passes around a Gavin Sawchuk five-yard TD run to give the Eagles a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter that was more than enough for the Valor defense.

2. Cherry Creek (1-0) won at Doherty, 42-0. The two-time defending champion Bruins maintained the state’s longest active win streak in a complete performance, claiming their 24th win in a row behind a 42-0 first half.

3. Columbine (1-0) won at Denver East, 42-21. Brock Zanetell capped a 28-0 Rebels first half with a touchdown pass to Jacob Fertitta-schell, and the Columbine lead swelled to 42-7 early in the fourth quarter before the Angels added a couple of late scores.

4. Ralston Valley (1-0) won at Fossil Ridge, 21-3. The Mustangs allowed just one field goal in the first quarter and pitched a shutout the rest of the way to overcome a night that saw the offense fumble the ball away three times.

5. Legend (1-0) won vs. 4A No. 6 Ponderosa, 42-0. The Titans dominated their Parker rivals, with Colton Warner throwing touchdown passes of 48 and 56 yards, and Bryce Vaz adding a two-yard TD run in a 28-0 first half.

6. Regis Jesuit (0-1) lost vs. No. 1 Valor Christian, 24-6. Exander Carroll’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Ford Luke in the second quarter was all the scoring the Raiders could muster against the Eagles defense.

7. Pomona (0-1) lost vs. No. 9 Grandview, 30-29 . The Panthers took a 20-7 lead in the first half on Chase Muller’s 32-yard TD reception, but the Wolves rallied to spoil Pomona head coach Nate Johnson’s debut.

8. Eaglecrest (0-1) lost at Chaparral, 35-21 . Wolverines QB Kylan Wilson racked up 317 total yards (186 passing) with four touchdown passes, and junior receiver Brayden Munroe caught seven passes for 136 yards and three TDS in the upset.

9. Grandview (1-0) won at No. 7 Pomona, 30-29 . Sophomore quarterback Liam Szarka had a hand in four Wolves touchdowns, including the game-winning rushing TD with seconds to go, to give Tom Doherty a win in his first game as Wolves head coach.

10. Fairview (1-0) won vs. Boulder, 42-21. The freshman connection of QB Bekkem Kritza and Jordan Rechel hooked up for two touchdown passes, and Kritza had three total as the Knights secured city bragging rights for the 13th straight time.

CLASS 4A

1. Palmer Ridge (1-0) won vs. Pueblo East, 49-14. Quarterback Derek Hester threw three touchdown passes, including 25- and 31-yard hookups with Anthony Costanzo, and ran for another. Both of Pueblo East’s TDS came off Palmer Ridge turnovers after the Eagles went down 28-0 in the first half.

2. Loveland (1-0) won vs. Thompson Valley, 34-0. Garrett Harstad ran in three touchdowns, and Tyson Williams put things away with a 25-yard TD run after the Red Wolves recovered an onside kick for a 28-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

3. Dakota Ridge (1-0) won vs. First Coast (Jacksonville, Fla.) in Orlando, 23-20. Adam Graves threw a touchdown pass and ran another during the first half, and the Eagles pulled out an impressive win in Florida.

4. Broomfield (0-1) lost at Golden, 29-22. The Eagles scored 22 points in the fourth quarter but a 22-0 deficit going into the final frame proved to be too much.

5. Fountain-fort Carson (1-0) won at Widefield, 48-0. The Trojans took a 42-0 lead into the halftime break and never looked back.

6. Ponderosa (0-1) lost at 5A No. 5 Legend, 42-0. The Mustangs were shut out for the first time in three years as they lost to their cross-town Parker rivals for the third straight meeting.

7. Montrose (1-0) won at Grand Junction Central, 46-6 . The Indians raced out to a 35-6 halftime lead and cruised from there. Austin Griffin and Tayne Ila both had a pair of rushing touchdowns.

8. Pueblo West (0-1) lost vs. Pine Creek, 27-0. The Eagles scored off a botched Cyclones snap, Josiah Roy threw touchdown passes of 30 and 25 yards, and Zion Hill had one touchdown running

(20 yards) and one receiving (30) in a dominant effort.

9. Skyline (1-0) won at Rampart, 21-14. Holding on to a onepoint lead late in the fourth quarter, the Falcons scored with 1:31 remaining to put away a pesky Rams team that rallied from 12-0 down.

10. Vista Ridge (1-0) won vs. Windsor, 26-20. The Wolves rallied from down 17-6 at halftime to win their season opener.
