Discovery Days returning to museum
Each week has a theme with additional programs to cover school breaks
The Longmont Museum is bringing back its Discovery Days in person for this school year as part of a partnership with the Longmont Public Library.
“I love teaching Discovery Days and helping some of our littlest community members grow and explore,” Longmont Museum Program Director Leigh Putman said. “We really want Discovery Days to help support families and offer fun introductory museum experiences, and I think that being back in person will help to achieve that.”
Discovery Days will be offered from 9 to 10:15 a.m., 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through Dec. 10. The program for nonschool-age children costs $4 per child for museum members and $4.50 per child for nonmembers.
Discovery Days even has something for older children during St. Vrain Valley School District school breaks. Children aged 11 and younger can participate on late start days from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 and 9.
Older children can attend any time Oct. 15, when the district has a no-school day. The same fees for younger children apply for the older children.
“I feel so lucky to be the steward of this program and to be a part of these formative years as children grow up attending Discovery Days year after year,” Putman said.
Last year, Putman said, the museum partnered with the library and created 80-100 monthly individually wrapped activity kids for community members while the pandemic was ongoing. “Additionally, we invited families to join me for virtual crafting and story time,” Putman added.
Longmont librarians created the reading list based on the weekly themes, and intentionally chose books by looking through a lens of diversity and equity.
“It was a really well-received program that allowed us to continue to support early childhood development, literacy, and social skills,” Putman explained. “This year we are partnering again with the library to have more children’s books each week for children to interact with during Discovery Days.”
