Fangio: Denver has “right kind of guys”

The Broncos started their quick turnaround from Sunday’s 34-24 loss to Las Vegas to Thursday night’s game at Cleveland by having the players off Monday.

“We did that last year for our Thursday game (at the New York Jets) and (have) done it other places and it’s a schedule that I like and I think the players like,” coach Vic Fangio said. “It gives the players a day to (decompress) and recover.”

Fangio said the Broncos will have walk-throughs Tuesday morning (to mimic a normal Wednesday) and afternoon (to mimic a normal Thursday), and will also be on the field Wednesday before flying to Cleveland.

“We have to sweat in the meeting room this week; we have to really strain our brain because we won’t really be able to strain on the practice field,” Fangio said.

The Broncos (3-3) take a three-game losing streak on the road to play the Browns (3-3).

“We have the right kind of guys that will rally,” Fangio said. “We have good leadership, there’s a high care factor and I have confidence in the guys.”

Injury report. Inside linebacker Alexander Johnson (torn pectoral) is out for the season and reserve inside linebacker Baron Browning (concussion) has been ruled out for the Browns game because there isn’t enough time for him to clear the necessary tests.

Fangio labeled left tackle Garett Bolles as “day to day” with a “lower leg/foot” injury that cost him the final 11 snaps on Sunday. Rookie outside linebacker Andre Mintze was scheduled to have an MRI on his hamstring Monday.

Jeudy’s status. Receiver Jerry Jeudy, on injured reserve since sustaining a high ankle sprain in Week 1, had his 21-day clock started Saturday, which means he is allowed to practice with the team.

“When we do some of our walkthroughs, he’ll stay out (afterward) and do some things fullspeed running routes and having the quarterback throw him the ball,” Fangio said. “We’ll get a barometer on him and we’ll see. I think the chances of him playing (Thursday) are less than 50%.”

Fourth-down call. In a 7-7 game late in the first quarter, the Broncos went for it on fourthand-2 from their 37-yard line.

Instead of using running back Javonte Williams (who was on the field), the Broncos called a pass that was too high for tight end Eric Saubert and intercepted by cornerback Brandon Facyson.

“I just had a belief and trust in the offense that they could get it,” Fangio said.

“We had gotten some earlier in the year that were critical and helped us. I don’t regret that decision at all.”

The Raiders missed a field goal on the ensuing possession.
