The Denver Post

Is Fangio really an upgrade over Joseph as coach?

- Readers talk and columnist Mark Kiszla responds Mark Kiszla: mkiszla@denverpost.com or @markkiszla

No accountability. I thought Vance Joseph was worse than Vic Fangio. Now, I’m not sure. I miss Pat

Bowlen. He would have cleaned house. But now, there’s no accountability in Dove Valley.

Joe, Broncos fan in Ohio

Kiz: Has it really come to this, Broncos Country? The state of the team is so sad we’re trying to decide whether Fangio or Joseph is a lousier coach? OK, Joseph got fired with a record of 11-21. Fangio is a tick better at 15-24. Had Denver given the reigns back to Mike Shanahan in 2018, would things really be markedly better? Well, in a quarterbackdriven league, it might be wiser for your head coach’s strengths to be on the offensive side of the ball. Now. And in the future.

Blaming Elway. As author of “The Drive,” John Elway hurt me and my Browns a long time ago. But Elway is also the guy that created this Bronco mess.

Steve, Browns fan in Colorado

Kiz: Elway engineered “The Drive” way back in January 1987, leading the Broncos’ to a 23-20 comeback victory in the AFC championship game on the road. How devastating was that defeat to Cleveland? I would suggest Elway contributed to driving the Browns out of town. Franchise owner Art Modell betrayed loyal fans by moving his team to Baltimore in the mid1990s. I know the Dawg Pound has never forgiven Elway. A generation after breaking the heart of the city, Elway walked on the field Thursday in Cleveland. And my spies tell me that still-bitter fans let Old No. 7 know his presence was definitely not appreciated.

A vote for Lock. I’d rather see a Drew Lock interception than a Teddy Bridgewater interception. At least with Lock, it’s a little more exciting.

Diesel in Denver

Kiz: Give Lock a chance? Don’t count on it. Uncle Vic gives every indication that so long as Bridgewater is healthy enough to trot on the field, Lock won’t get off the bench.

Colorado punishment. I hear the Colorado State Patrol is handing out tickets to Broncos games instead of speeding citations. And if you get caught a second time, the Colorado State Patrol makes you use them.

Joe, cigar lover

Kiz: Hey, mister. I do the Dad jokes around here. Now kindly get off my lawn.

Loyal reader? Wow, Kiszla. You are such a venomous, nasty, little drama queen of a sportswriter. Your whole career is about making something out of nothing and throwing people under the bus. How many other teams can stop the run with all four starting linebackers out due to injury? It was actually a courageous effort to hold the Browns to 17 points. The Broncos have been dealing with a combined six-eight starters out on both sides of the ball. I can’t stand you as both person and writer. I stopped reading you a long time ago.

Chris, miffed Kiz: I am confused (as is often the case). How would you know what I wrote about the Broncos’ loss in Cleveland if you didn’t peruse my column? Humble thanks for reading. And in summary ... And today’s parting shot is a concise summary of the Broncos’ 17-14 loss to Cleveland.

Don’t think I have ever watched a three-point game where one team was never in it.

Dave, brutally honest
