Accountability for gun owners would protect kids

-

Re: “Four dead – Michigan teen charged in school shooting,” Dec. 2 news story Yes, another school shooting!

Until our state and federal legislators take charge, and in a bipartisan way, more school shootings will continue to happen. After years of these shootings and the deaths of many adults and kids, it only proves that our legislators don’t care. It’s reported there have been 231 U.S. school shootings since the 1999 Columbine shooting, with 304 that have died and 485 injured, which also included 10 elementary schools.

My family experienced the Columbine High School shooting, as our son was there that day and luckily wasn’t physically harmed; however, psychological harm was inflicted upon us. Since Columbine, it’s hard to comprehend how many families across the U.S. now must live with the aftermath of so many horrific events, which seems to have created a new-normal anxiety for parents and their kids that is not acceptable.

I say enough is enough! I demand that our state and federal legislators quit the decades of debating this topic and get something done. Citizens can still own guns, but there need to be laws enacted now that creates absolute accountability regarding gun ownership and control.

However, the bigger problem we still have is the spineless legislators who succumb to questionable congressional leadership, along with corporate and dark money that obstructs any needed gun control measures.

We need to really start today, in better protecting our schools and kids.
