Weapons don’t cause war

Re: “Arms industry wins in war, while people suffer,” March 31 commentary

First, for two scholars, they lack common sense and knowledge of history. Those inanimate things, the guns and other weapons of war, don’t cause war. Megalomaniacs, power-hungry sociopaths and just plain crazy people cause wars.

Their first point states we need to get corporations, social media companies and the social justice movement to mobilize to support peace in Ukraine. Do they not know that freedom of speech isn’t a global right? They want the tech companies to control the narrative of peace. The same tech companies that practice cancel culture?

Their sixth point is the real gem. Ukraine should give up all hopes of joining NATO, for self-preservation, as long as its safety is guaranteed. That was done in 1994 with the Budapest Memorandum. It states the United States will seek U.N. assistance to aid Ukraine if it falls victim to aggression from a nuclear power. The U.N. is providing only humanitarian aid.

The final point assures me they have lost their grip on reality. They want China to be a mediator because they understand the “quest for dignity,” and by doing so, can “gain global stature.” This is the same China that commits genocide, has a leader keen to attain global power and doesn’t allow its citizens the right to speak against the government.

My target pistol didn’t shoot anyone, ever. It harbors no ill will toward others. Until I load it, it’s just a paperweight. Eliminating weapons won’t solve anything. Reducing funding to the military could make the U.S. the next Ukraine.
