Left- hander Rolison goes on injured list with shoulder strain

-

Ryan Rolison is injured again. The Rockies’ top left-handed pitching prospect was placed on the 60- day injured list Monday with a shoulder strain. Last season, Rolison was limited to 16 games in the minors because of a case of appendicitis, followed by a broken bone in his throwing hand.

In another roster move, Colorado selected the contract of left-hander pitcher Ty Blach, a Regis Jesuit High School graduate. He’s penciled in as a long reliever.

Also, the Rockies placed righthander Peter Lambert on the 10day IL with right forearm inflammation. Lambert, who underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2020, was a limited participant in spring training after he experienced pain in his right elbow shortly before camp opened.

“We are being extra cautious and we also know there is going to be an innings limit for Peter this year,” manager Bud Black said last week. “I don’t see Peter in a starting role and grinding out 200 innings (this season). We will be judicious with how we use Peter.

“He had a little bit of elbow soreness at the tail end of the lockout and when he came in we put him on a slower pace.”

Rolison, Colorado’s first-round pick out of Ole Miss in 2018 (22nd overall), pitched in two Cactus League games this spring (3 1/3 innings), posting a 10.80 ERA.

In a March 22 game, he threw his fastball 88-90 mph, down from his usual 91-94 mph velocity.

“My ‘velo’ wasn’t where I wanted it to be, but it’s still early on,” Rolison said at the time. “My curveball and fastball were down a couple of ticks, but I’ll get back to work tomorrow and get ready for the next one.”

After missing so much time last season, Rolison pitched in the Dominican Winter League. He made five starts for Licey, going 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA to go with 24 strikeouts against five walks in 20 innings.

The Rockies currently have 28 active players remaining in major league camp. Colorado’s regular season opens Friday when it hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field.
