FC Dallas’ 3 straight goals deny Rapids 1st road win

- By Brendan Ploen

As the old adage goes, ninetenths of the law in soccer comes down to possession.

In Saturday night’s case, even though the Colorado Rapids controlled the ball, they lost the game. A five- minute period on both sides of the halftime whistle left Colorado ruing its missed chances in a 3- 1 loss to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco.

The Rapids were looking for their first road win of the 2022 season but it will have to wait.

The Rapids dominated the first 46- and- a- half minutes. Dallas controlled the second half as Jesus Ferreira scored two goals, including an 89th minute tally that sealed the deal.

Colorado took the lead at the half- hour mark as Diego Rubio scored his third goal of the season on a beautiful one- time pass from Michael Barrios.

But 30 seconds before the halftime whistle, deep into stoppage time, Brandon Servania saw plenty of room and drove a shot from 45 yards.

The shot caught goalkeeper William Yarbrough off guard. He attempted to dive late, but the knuckleball- effect of the shot was enough to make it 1- 1.

The best chance of the first half arguably came from Max Alves as the Rapids had a three- on- two advantage. Max had plenty of room, but his shot sailed high and wide in the seventh minute. Barrios had a one- on- one opportunity as well, but his shot was saved by FC Dallas keeper Maarten Paes.

Colorado controlled 63% of the ball in the first half and had seven shots and three corner kicks to FC Dallas’ one shot and 37% possession. Four players received yellow cards, three for Colorado: MarkAnthony Kaye, Max and Barrios.

In the second half, Dallas came out on the front foot. In the 50th minute, Rubio attempted to clear a tight pass he received and directed it to the middle of the field. Marco Farfan came up with the interception and found Ferreira, who turned and fired low to beat Yarbrough for his fifth goal of the season to make it 2- 1.

After it lost the lead, Colorado had a few good chances. Max had a shot from beyond the 18- yard box but did not get enough on it. Then, in the 67th minute, Keegan Rosenberry, who had a strong night throughout, hit the post after Rubio found him on a pass cutting inside.

In the 89th minute with the Rapids pressing high and looking for an equalizer after Andre Shinyashiki

replaced Rubio a few minutes earlier, Ferreira struck again. Servania played in the striker who was nearly all alone and dribbled around Yarbrough and calmly finished to make it 3- 1.

Rapids head coach Robin Fraser made one change from last weekend as Max got the start ahead of Jonathan Lewis.

Lewis had previously started the first five games of the season, while it was Max’s first start since the regular- season opener against LAFC.

Colorado will remain on the road as it will face Minnesota United at 5: 30 p. m. next Saturday at Allianz Field in Saint Paul.
