First-round Instant Analysis

- By Ryan O’halloran, The Denver Post

No. 1 Jacksonville Jaguars

Edge, Travon Walker, Georgia: A puzzling pick. The Jaguars took Walker based on his 4.52-second speed and not his production (9 sacks in 36 games).

No. 2 Detroit Lions

Edge, Aidan Hutchinson, Michigan: An easy decision. Hutchinson had 14 sacks in 14 games last year for the Wolverines. He will be an immediate pass-rush threat.

No. 3 Houston Texans

CB Derek Stingley, Jr., LSU: If he plays like he did in 2019, the Texans will get the type of impact player the Broncos did with CB Pat Surtain II.

No. 4 New York Jets

KCB Sauce Gardner, Cincinnati: He has great length (6-foot-3) and had great college production (nine career interceptions). Get ready to cover Stefon Diggs, young fella.

No. 7 New York Giants

OT Evan Neal, Alabama: The Giants wrap an excellent first night by drafting the massive Neal (6-foot-7, 337 pounds). Right or left tackle is the question.

The Lions fleeced Minnesota, moving up 20 spots without giving up next year’s first- round pick. Williams is recovering from a torn ACL.

No. 13 Philadelphia Eagles

No. 14 Baltimore Ravens

S Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame: A month after signing Saints safety Marcus Williams, Baltimore completes his safety spot overhaul by adding Hamilton.

No. 19 New Orleans Saints

OT Trevor Penning, Northern Iowa: The Saints needed a left tackle after losing Terron Armstead to Miami in free agency. Penning started 31 games at that spot.

No. 20 Pittsburgh Steelers

QB Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Finally, a quarterback! Pickett threw 42 touchdowns for Pitt last year and should replace Mitchell Trubisky in quick order.

No. 21 Kansas City Chiefs

CB Trent Mcduffie, Washington: The Chiefs moved up eight spots with New England to draft Mcduffie, who will replace the departed Charvarius Ward (signed with 49ers).

ILB Devin Lloyd, Utah. The Jaguars moved up eight picks with Tampa Bay to draft the ultra-productive Lloyd (255 tackles, 16K sacks and five interceptions in career).

DT Devonte Wyatt, Georgia. The Packers spent the night loading up on defense (Wyatt had 113 career tackles), but who’s going to catch passes from Aaron Rodgers?

No. 29 New England Patriots

G Cole Strange, Chattanooga: This has to be the biggest reach of the night, right? Strange started 42 games at left guard.

No. 30 Kansas City Chiefs

Edge George Karlaftis, Purdue: The Chiefs find a pass rusher to play opposite Frank Clark. Karlaftis had 14K sacks in 27 games.

No. 31 Cincinnati Bengals

S Daxton Hill, Michigan: A terrific pick for the Bengals, who probably didn’t think Hill would be on board. He can play nickel and safety.

No. 32 Minnesota Vikings

S Lewis Cine, Georgia: Cine had 73 tackles and 10 pass break-ups last year and will be expected to play alongside veteran Harrison Smith.
