BOULDER>> A University of Colorado student has been accused of recording women while they were using the bathroom and attempting to disarm an arresting police officer.

Colin Adams, 21, is facing charges of attempting to disarm a peace officer, invasion of privacy for sexual gratification and resisting arrest.

Adams is in custody on $30,000 bail and is awaiting a formal filing of charges today.

According to an affidavit, a victim said at 5:30 p.m. Sunday she saw a camera between the crack in the bathroom stall in the basement of the residence hall being used to record her while she was using the bathroom. The victim told police that before entering the bathroom, she saw a man walking around in the hallway near the restroom and she had seen the man in the area several times previously.

After noticing the camera, the victim ran out of the bathroom where she saw the man whom she had previously seen outside running away. A residential adviser in the building told police they had seen Adams on Friday evening wandering in the same hallway as the incident “with no obvious purpose” and Adams was known to very frequently hang around in this area of the building.

After reviewing video footage from the building elevator, police saw a man matching Adams’ description taking the elevator down to the basement level shortly after 4:44 p.m. Sunday. Police then performed a photo array with the victim, who identified Adams as the suspect.

CU officers on Monday spoke with Adams at his dorm room, and Adams initially said he had often seen shady people in the area of the women’s basement bathroom “all the time” and said he had seen them holding some sort of cable with a video camera on it. After stating a number of inconsistencies with his story and telling police he was forgetful, Adams admitted that he was the one putting cameras in the bathroom while it was occupied.

According to the affidavit, Adams said he had used a cable device which connects to his phone with about five to seven other woman between January and February and told police he used the videos to masturbate.

After finding the videos in Adams phone and the camera in his room, officers told Adams he was under arrest and told him to turn around and place his arms behind his back. According to the affidavit, as the officer attempted to grab his arms, Adams pulled away and being flailing his arms before aggressively attacking the officer.

The officer said he then hit Adams three times in his stomach to distract him while telling him to stop fighting, The officer reported in the affidavit that he felt a hard tug on his handgun and saw Adam’s hand on the grip of his gun.

The officer then yelled several times for Adams to let go of his gun before he was able to free Adams’ grip. The officer then drew his stun gun and used it on Adams.

Police then gained control of Adams and took him to the ground before placing him in handcuffs.

The exact residence hall where the incident took place was redacted in the affidavit.

On Tuesday, CU officials confirmed the arrest and said the case remains under investigation and therefore were unable to comment further.

The university encouraged anyone who feels as though they have information related to the case to contact CU police at 303492-6666 and reference case no. 2024-0365.
