Severe weather likely to hit central, western Iowa

Severe weather will likely make its way back to Iowa this weekend.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will all have a chance of strong to severe storms, the National Weather Service office in Des Moines posted on social media.

The severe weather outlook for this weekend includes the risk of tornadoes, large hail and strong wind starting Friday afternoon and evening.

What is Iowa’s severe weather outlook for Friday?

Friday’s high in Des Moines will be near 65 degrees with a low around 50 degrees. Storms are expected later into the afternoon and evening, from 3 to 11 p.m.

The entire state has at least a marginal risk for severe weather, according to the weather service. That increases to a slight risk in western Iowa and an enhanced risk in central and southwest Iowa.

Tornadoes are possible, with the greatest chance occurring in southwest Iowa. Forecaster­s said any tornadoes that develop in that area could reach EF2 strength.

Storms will be fast-moving and could produce wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. Hail 2 inches in diameter is possible as well.

What is Iowa’s severe weather outlook for Saturday?

It’ll be partly sunny in Des Moines on Saturday with a high near 79 degrees, and showers and thundersto­rms likely before 1 p.m. The nightly low will be near 60 degrees.

Most of central and eastern Iowa are at a slight risk for severe weather.

Primary threats are damaging winds and hail. NWS said heavy rain and some tornadoes are also possible.

What is Iowa’s severe weather outlook for Sunday?

Sunday’s high will be near 73 degrees in Des Moines with a low around 60 degrees. The highest chance for strong to severe storms will be late afternoon to evening.

Storms before Sunday will impact the details surroundin­g the day’s risks, NWS said.
