Leader Lookback: Open house, birthday girl

This is what was in The Evening Leader 50 years ago this week.

MORE THAN 1,000 ATTENDED FIRST NATIONAL BANK OPEN HOUSE

More than 1,000 residents of the area visited the St. Marys branch of the First National Bank of Wapakoneta at the open house of the new institutio­n.

They made a guided tour of the building to view the safety deposit boxes, the bookkeepin­g equipment, the drive-in window office, the ladies and men’s restrooms, the lounge equipped with a refrigerat­or, range and coffee making equipment, the cubicles for convenienc­e of patrons wishing to check contents of their safety deposit boxes, the offices of manager Don Harden and Jim Schroer.

Visitors admired the decor. Beautiful floral

arrangemen­ts were stationed at many points through the building. They bore the congratula­tory messages of wellwisher­s in St. Marys and neighborin­g towns.

Winners of two $100 savings accounts awarded by the bank to registrant­s were won by Connie Hoelscher, R.R. 1, New Knoxville, and Norbert Stammen, R.R. 1, New Bremen. Ralph Walther, president of the First National, Mr. Harden, the local directors of the bank, Charles Monroe, Richard Neely, Dr. D. L. Kile and H. H. Cook, other officers and directors of the bank, and many of the bank’s personnel were on hand to greet the visitors and to escort them through the building. The First National Bank’s fine new building is located in West Spring Street on the site of the former Limbacher Bakery Building.

ST. MARYS POLICE EARNED 6 TROPHIES IN PISTOL MATCH

St. Marys patrolmen used their shooting eyes in the Piqua Pistol Match.

Six trophies were brought back by St. Marys patrolman from the match in which they participat­ed.

Patrolmen George Henderson and Ron Keiber won second in Class C, two-man team, and received individual trophies plus a trophy for the department. Patrolman Henderson also received the thirdplace trophy, Class C: Patrolman Jack Kuenning beat him by a few points to win second place trophy, Class C.

Patrolman Bill Grunden received the second place trophy in Class B.

All six trophies are on display at the St. Marys Police Department.

Sgt. Charles Nishwitz, of Post Six, State Highway Patrol, won the first place trophy in Class B.

SCHNELLE CELEBRATES HER FIRST BIRTHDAY

A birthday party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Schnelle, Sunday, for their daughter, Tisha Ann, who became one year old September 12. Tisha’s first cake was decorated with pink roses and a small miniature train that held the one candle.

A lunch of cake, ice cream, mints and nuts was served. Later in the evening, everyone enjoyed a turkey supper.

Those who helped Tisha celebrate her birthday were Mr. and Mrs. James Schnelle, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence McDermitt, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Schnelle, Mr. and Mrs. Verl Gayer and Diane and Drew Gayer. Tisha received many lovely gifts.

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Pummell and sons were unable to attend the party but visited Tisha last week and surprised her with a lovely gift.

Tisha also received a call from her Aunt Ginny Wolfe in California wishing her a happy birthday.

TIM COOK, ST. MARYS, DAVID DENNIS, NEW KNOXVILLE, THOMAS JACOBS, MINSTER NAMED SEMI-FINALISTS IN NMSQT

Three Auglaize county high school seniors, Tim Cook of St. Marys, David Dennis of New Knoxville and Thomas Jacobs, of Minster, have been named semifinali­sts in the 1970-71 National Merit Scholarshi­p Program, it was announced today by their high school principals, Quentin Clark, St. Marys, Martin Rehmert, New Knoxville and Edmund Van Oss, Minster.

They are among the 14,750 semifinali­sts named as the highest scorers in their states on the National Merit Scholarshi­p Qualifying Test given last February to some 710,000 students in 17,000 schools nationwide. They constitute less than one percent of the graduating secondary school seniors in the United States.

Timothy Cook is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Cook, 312 South Main Street, St. Marys. He is a member of the National Honor Society, served as a delegate to Buckeye Boys State in 1970, was a member of the 1968 Earth Science Scholarshi­p team and the 1970 advanced algebra scholarshi­p team. He ranked 10th in Division I, Ohio, and 3rd in Bowling Green District all schools and third in Division I, BGSU District. He is a member of the baseball and basketball teams and a Science Club member.

David Dennis is the son of Mrs. Bernice Dennis, New Knoxville. He has been active in the New Knoxville high school band and chorus. He plays intramural basketball and had a role in the class play. Thomas Jacobs is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Jacobs, 179 North Garfield, Minster. He ranks first scholastic­ally at the present time in a class of 82, Principal Van Oss said.

In his freshman year, he ranked fifth in the District and 19th in the state, Div. III, Latin I, sophomore year, 6th in the district and honorable mention in the state, English II and junior year, 6th in the district and in the state, Div. III, chemistry.

He is a member of the Future Teachers Associatio­n, serves as the student director of the school band, serves as page editor of the school paper, is a member of the National Honor Society and the Catholic Youth Organizati­on. He received the American Chemical Society $200 scholarshi­p.
