Wildcats win it on field goal

MINSTER — The Wildcats got into the win column on Friday night, defeating Delphos St. John’s 10-7 in Midwest Athletic Conference action.

With the win, Minster’s Geron Stokes tied Ken Newland’s school record for most wins with 67.

Conner Albers carried the ball six times and Johnny Nixon completed two passes to Austin Wellman and two to Phil Trzaska on Minster’s opening drive, with the latter going for an 11-yard touchdown.

Minster (1-3, 1-3 MAC) forced a fourth down stop on the Blue Jays next possession.

Their ensuing 13-play drive stalled at the Delphos St. John’s (1-3, 1-3 MAC) 33-yard line and were forced to punt.

There would be no more scoring until the fourth quarter when Delphos St. John’s Clay Paddubny ran for a 54-yard touchdown with 9:44 left in the game, tying it at 7-7.

Both teams punted on their next drives. Minster took over with 6:54 left and were able to pick up 11 yards on 3rd and 16. Electing to go for it, Nixon’s pass fell incomplete on 4th and 5.

The Wildcats defense held tight on the Blue Jays next drive, forcing a stop as Delphos St. John’s went for it on 4th and 3 from Minster’s 15-yard line.

Numerous Nixon completion­s then set the Wildcats up at Delphos St. John’s 13-yard line with five seconds left.

Bryan Falk trotted out and nailed the 30-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Wildcats to the 10-7 victory.

Wellman had a team-high 113 yards on 19 carries. Nixon went 15-21 and threw for 113 yards and a touchdown.
