50 Years Ago This Week – 1970

Fifty years ago this week in 1970, the St. Marys football team was in action and rolled over the Greenville Green Wave in an easy, 50-7 victory. The Roughriders led 22-0 at the end of the first period before extending their lead to 36-0 at intermission. They added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third period to move in front 44-0, and although Greenville avoided the shutout in the closing minutes, it was too late as St. Marys took the 43-point triumph. Craig Huwer and Mike Youngs each scored three touchdowns in the victory for the Blue and Gold..

25 Years Ago This Week – 1995

Twenty-five years ago this week in 1995, the New Bremen football team enjoyed a non-league victory on the gridiron with their 34-7 upending of the Miami East Vikings. Miami East lit the scoreboard up first in the battle in the opening period, but it didn’t take long for the Cardinals to knot things up and eventually score the contest’s next 34 points. A 7-yard touchdown run by Josh Storrer made the score 7-7 heading into the second quarter before New Bremen took a 27-7 cushion into the locker room with them at halftime thanks to two more touchdowns by Storrer and one by Rob Rismiller. Eric Dicke added the final score of the night in the final period to give the Cardinals the 27-point victory and move to 3-0 on the young season.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2010

Ten years ago this week in 2010, the New Bremen Cardinals football team, powered by 28 points in the first half, fought off a late charge by the Fort Recovery Indians to take a 35-20 victory in Midwest Athletic Conference action. Elliot Westerbeck got the scoring underway for the Crimson and Gold with a 36-yard run in the first period before Alec Frideger added a score later in the same stanza. Westerbeck and Calib Cox each tallied touchdown runs in the second quarter to give their team a 28-7 command at intermission. Nathan Skinner put the Cards in front 35-7 with a two-run punch in the fourth quarter, and although the Indians scored twice more in the contest, it wasn’t close enough, as New Bremen took the 15-point victory for their first win of the campaign.
