50 Years Ago This Week – 1970

Fifty years ago this week in 1970, the St. Marys football team opened the Western Buckeye League portion of their schedule with a decisive 38-12 victory over the Van Wert Cougars. The Roughrider­s led 8-0 at the conclusion of the first period before extending their advantage to 22-0 at the halftime break. The Cougars scored once in the third stanza to trim their deficit to 22-6, but St. Marys outscored them 16-6 in the final minutes to walk away with the 26-point triumph. St. Marys was paced by more than 300 yards of offense, while the defense forced three turnovers and limited the Cougars to just 114 yards on the evening.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1995

Twenty-five years ago this week in 1995, the St. Marys volleyball team took the court in Western Buckeye League play at home against the Celina Bulldogs and took the easy victory by set finals of 15-2 and 15-4. Kelly Makley served up St. Marys’ first seven points of the opening game and they close the set with the final eight points from Leslie Kill, Amy Bowers, and Kara James to take the easy win. It was much of the same in game two for St. Marys. Makley dished up eight straight points and her team never looked back, as they improved to 10-4 on the season and 3-2 in league play.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2010

Ten years ago this week in 2010, the Minster football team, led by quarterbac­k Chase Paxson, picked up their first win of the season and first career victory for head coach Nate Moore as they edged the New Bremen Cardinals by a final of 27-20. Paxson completed 18 passes in the triumph for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also running for another score. The Wildcats got the scoring underway in the first period with an 8-yard run from Paxson, before New Bremen knotted things at seven points following a nineyard pass from Elliot Westerbeck to Ben Chaney. The Wildcats took the lead for good in the second quarter with a 20-yard field goal from Devon Poeppelman for the 10-7 lead at intermissi­on. An 11-yard touchdown reception by Daniel Gusching from Paxson gave the Wildcats a 17-7 cushion, and although New Bremen outscored Minster 13-10 in the final stanza it wasn’t enough, as they Wildcats moved to 1-4 on the season with the seven-point victory.
