50 Years Ago This Week – 1970

Fifty years ago this week in 1970, the St. Marys wrestling team ignited its’ first-ever season on the road at Delphos against the St. John’s Blue Jays and Lincolnvie­w Lancers. Although the Roughrider­s finished in third place out of the three teams, they were still impressive in the program’s debut. Mike Dzalamanow, Greg McDermitt, and Jim Voisard all recorded victories with pins, while Tom Wells and Jeff Fleagle took wins by decision on the afternoon.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1995

Twenty-five years ago this week in 1995, the New Knoxville Rangers and New Bremen Cardinals boys’ basketball teams tipped off the 1995 campaign with the visiting Rangers earning a 59-52 victory. New Bremen shot out to a 15-14 advantage after one quarter of action, before bumping their edge to 28-24 at the halftime break. The Rangers caught fire in the third period, by out-scoring New Bremen 24-9 in the stanza and held off a Cardinal rally in the closing period to leave with the seven-point victory. Leading the way for the victorious Rangers was John Meyer with 25 points, while Jeff Eschmeyer added 18 in the triumph. Brian Koesters led the scoring for the Cardinals with 13 points, with Chris Pape adding ten counters in the setback.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2010

Ten years ago this week in 2010, the St. Marys’ girls’ basketball squad picked up a non-league win on their home court by a final of 35-28 over the Kalida Wildcats. The Roughrider­s pushed in command 7-3 at the end of the first period, before extending their lead to 17-9 at intermissi­on. The teams knotted with seven points apiece in the third stanza, and although Kalida held a 12-11 margin in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough, as St. Marys held on for the seven-point victory. Leading the way in the scoring column for the Blue and Gold were Ashleigh Falk and Jo Steva with nine points apiece. The Roughrider­s landed just one player in double-digits as Paul Pfenning led the way with 11 points in the defeat.
