Cardinals win it on Busse’s buzzer-beater

NEW BREMEN — A game-winning shot by Reece Busse in overtime led New Bremen to a 36-35 victory against Fort Loramie in a boys basketball game on Saturday.

Trailing 35-32 in overtime, Busse’s layup pulled the game within a point as the senior then ended the game on a 17-foot jumper.

Busse led the Cardinals (2-1) with 17 points and David Homan followed with nine points and seven rebounds. Fort Loramie’s (3-3) Caeleb Meyer led all scorers with 13 points.

New Bremen opened the game with an

8- 1 lead in the opening quarter, but the Redskins pulled within one in the early going of the second quarter on a Meyer layup.

The Redskins got their first lead of the game on a Meyer layup to open the third quarter and the team took its biggest lead of the game after a layup by Collin Moore to push it to a 17-14 game.

A 3-pointer by Busse, followed by back-to- back jumpers from Busse and a layup by Homan capped a 10- 0 run by the Cardinals to pull ahead 24-17. A 10-1 run by the Redskins concluded the third quarter with a 27-25 Fort Loramie lead.

Neither team led by more than three points in the fourth quarter. Caleb Maurer broke a 27-27 tie with a 13-foot jumper and Meyer connected on a layup to lead 30-27 late in the quarter but Trevor Bergman’s 3-pointer forced overtime with the score 30-30 as Meyer missed a potential game- winning 3-point attempt at the end of the fourth.

The junior varsity game was just as entertaini­ng, with Fort Loramie winning 59-57 in triple overtime.

The Cardinals will host St. Henry on Friday.

__ MINSTER 49, WAPAKONETA 42

MINSTER — Two games back from injury, Bryan Falk made his presence felt with a 17-point effort to lead Minster to a 49- 42 non-conference victory against Wapakoneta on Saturday.

Falk finished 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line while also grabbing four rebounds for the Wildcats (4-1).

Justin Nixon followed with 10 points and eight boards and Eric Schmidt scored eight points.

After trailing 13-9 through the first eight minutes, Minster outscored Wapakoneta in every quarter, a combined 40-29 in quarters two through four. Minster fell in the junior varsity game 44-28. The Wildcats play again Friday in a home tilt with Delphos St. John’s.

__ GIRLS BASKETBALL DELPHOS JEFFERSON 48, NEW BREMEN 39

DELPHOS — Delphos Jefferson doubled its scoring in the second and third quarters of Saturday’s non-conference girls basketball game to hand New Bremen a 48-39 defeat.

The Cardinals (1-3) led 9-7 after one quarter, but were outscored 26-13 in the second and third quarters combined to trail 33-22 heading into the fourth stanza.

Madison Cordonnier led the Cardinals as the lone player to score in double figures with 11 points. Elli Roetgerman and Kaylee Freund each scored nine points.

Three players scored double figures for the Wildcats, led by Alyvia Lindeman with 18 points.

New Bremen won the junior varsity contest 36- 15.

The Cardinals will take on St. Henry on Thursday.
