ORIGINAL BED OF MIAMI ERIE CANAL COMES TO VIEW

The original bed of the Miami and Erie Canal, constructed more than 125 years ago, is back into view after the removal of decayed wood and vegetation to a depth of five and six feet. The muck was removed by rag line at the highway 33 bypass construction site north of St. Marys.

The rounded bed of the canal was exposed after the muck was removed to produce a base for the corrugated metal pipe to carry the canal under the by-pass.

Sand to a depth of three feet will be spread in the canal bed, then firmed, to provide a base for the 11’7” by 7’5” pre-fabricated corrugated metal pipe arch to carry the canal under by-pass 33. The pipe will be 256 feet long.

The size of the pipe will permit passage of small boats and canoes.

A by-pass has been provided for the flow of canal water while the construction work is in progress.
