Area residents weigh in on inauguration
President Joe Biden took his oath of office just before noon on Wednesday while local people shared their thoughts on the incoming administration, whether they had or planned to watch the inauguration and what they felt were the biggest issues that needed to be addressed in the next four years.
Their expectations range from smooth sailing to all downhill from here. Jack Lambert, of Wapakoneta, said, “I hope [Biden] doesn’t change too much. It’s always hard; Trump changed a lot of things and made our economy a lot better.”
Lambert also said he would be keeping an eye on the economy while admitting he didn’t plan to watch any of the inauguration.
“The economy is by far what will affect Americans the most,” Lambert said. “With the Green New Deal, boy that scares the hell out of me.”
Maeve Naylor of St. Marys wanted nothing but the best for the incoming administration, while at the same time acknowledging the transition likely wouldn’t be easy.
“I know it’s going to be difficult, but we have to have faith … this government [won’t] divide anymore,” Naylor said.
She expressed worry over Biden’s administration and their potential plans for her taxes, and believed for any economic recovery to occur the most pressing issue for the incoming administration was handling the pandemic.
Other residents were concerned for every part of the country’s future. “Take a look around — this is as good it’s ever gonna be right now,” said Dennis Greiwe, a Wapakoneta resident, said.
He said the top issue for him is illegal immigration, with Medicare for all coming in second. Greiwe did not plan to watch the proceedings.
