50 Years Ago This Week – 1971

Fifty years ago this week in 1971, the St. Marys boys’ basketball took to the hardwood and dominated the Wapakoneta Redskins in Western Buckeye League action by a final of 71-44. The first half of the battle was tight as the two teams were deadlocked at 8-8 at the end of the first quarter before the Roughriders edged in front 24-22 at the halftime break. From there it was all St. Marys though, as they extended their lead to twelve points at the end of the third quarter and by 26 points at the conclusion of the contest. Mike Youngs led the Blue and Gold with 22 points in the victory and was joined in double digits by Doug Maze with 19 points and Dave Phipps with 11 counters.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1996

Twenty-five years ago this week in 1996, the Minster and New Bremen girls’ basketball teams renewed their neighborhood rivalry on the basketball floor with the home-standing Wildcats taking the win, 55-35. Minster skated out in front 19-10 in the opening period before doubling up the Cardinals 31-15 at intermission. The teams each scored nine points in the third quarter, before Minster extended their command in the end to 20 points. Mary Thieman led all Wildcat scorers with 16 points and Lauren Shenk added 12 as Minster moved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

Ten years ago this week in 2011, the New Knoxville boys’ basketball team picked up a Midwest Athletic Conference victory on the road with a resounding 59-25 triumph over the New Bremen Cardinals. The Rangers started things off with a 13-4 lead after one and pushed ahead to a 30-6 lead at the halftime break, offering little doubt as to the outcome. The Rangers continued to pile on in the third and led 51-15 with eight minutes left to play. Although the Cardinals out-scored New Knoxville 10-8 in the final stanza, it wasn’t near enough, as New Knoxville stormed to the 34-point victory. Marcus Reineke and Luke Leffel paced the Rangers with 20 and 13 points respectively.
