Riders look to continue strong run
St. Marys looking to lock down No. 3 seed in sectionals with 3 games left
The St. Marys Roughriders girls basketball team is enjoying its best season in awhile and they are looking to continue that run to get them a No. 3 seed in the Division II northwest district.
St. Marys (11-3, 4-1 WBL) have won four straight after taking down No. 11-seeded Marion Local on Tuesday and finished 6-1 in a seven-game road trip.
Thursday the Roughriders will return home against Kenton as they embark on another stretch this season — four games in a seven-day stretch. That run of games includes Bryan, a team they could play again in the playoffs, and No. 2-ranked Minster on Jan. 26.
Sectional seedings will be announced on Jan. 31 and usually turned in the Wednesday or Thursday before that datum so the Roughriders will not have a chance against state-ranked Bath before the seedings come out.
Looking at the standings as of Wednesday, the Roughriders are second behind Bath (14-2, 5-0) and well distanced from Shawnee (9-5, 3-2), who they defeated last week.
Bryan (10-2) is atop of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League with Wauseon (9-3) and No. 1-ranked Napoleon (11-1) in the Northern Lakes League.
Napoleon could almost certainly be the No. 1 seed in the district, followed by Bath and St. Marys, especially if the Roughriders earn a win against Bryan.
St. Marys earned the No. 4 seed last season but had a favorable draw in the Paulding District to lead it to a district runner-up finish.
__ BOYS GAME POSTPONED
The St. Marys athletic website announced Wednesday evening that the Roughriders boys game at Kenton has been postponed for Friday. No rescheduled date has been announced.
Friday’s postponed marks the third one this season for St. Marys, but will give the team much needed rest after playing its third game in five days on Tuesday.
The Roughriders will return to action on Saturday when they travel to McGuffey to take on Upper Scioto Valley.
