New Bremen receives estimate for pool work

NEW BREMEN — Mayor Bob Parker provided a swimming pool update to councilors on Monday during the village of New Bremen council’s second meeting of the month.

The village pool is need of repairs and Parker said they received an estimate last week that would total $98,000 to get it fixed.

“That’s not including concrete or gravel,” Parker said about the quote. “We’re going to go out for bid tomorrow for two weeks and try to get some other quotes on that.”

Parker said if they were to go with the current bid, which belongs to Astro Pool Company — the company that installed the pool originally — then they could take on the project in March.

The pool will also need to have the drain replaced because the current one isn’t up to code.

“Because we’re ripping up the drain in the pool, there is a new style of drain we now have to put in that’s code today that wasn’t back then to keep from being suctioned to the bottom of the pool,” said Parker.

Schedule 80 piping would also be installed to replace all the current piping which is Schedule 40. Schedule 40 was the standard when the pool was originally installed.

In other business, council:

• Completed a first reading on Ordinance 2021-01-01 which was about improvement of various bridge and culvert repairs in Koop Ditch. Village Administrator Brent Richter said the Ohio Department of Transportation is scheduled

to do work during the second quarter of 2022 and they’re going to line the culvert in Koop Ditch to help improve the life of it. The village owns some of the culvert extended past the state Route 274 portion, which is more than what ODOT would do work on because it’s not state property. The village will be responsible for paying for the portion of what they own.

Councilors decided it would be beneficial for ODOT to work on the village’s portion while they work on the stateowned part as crews are out there. Richter said the work would have to be done eventually as the creek would become backed up if not. The cost would be $40,000.

• Discussed the ditch at the Bunker Hill Industrial Park. Parker said Auglaize County workers showed up at Bunker Hill to start flagging off where they were going to dig a new ditch as the one that’s currently there runs diagonal across the property.

Council agreed to wait and see if any interested buyers come forward before they make their decision on which direction to dig the ditch based on what plots of land would be sold.

• Discussed getting the village’s snow machine up and running so they can make snow at BremenFest Park for the sledding hill. Richter said he’s been eyeing the weather forecast but there hasn’t been a good enough stretch where it’s gotten cold enough to do so. According to the village’s website regarding snow manufacturing, it says: “The ideal conditions for snow making is high humidity and temperatures below 28 degrees. If there are 2 inches of snow on the ground, no snow will be made. If snow is needed, the parks superintendent will decide by looking at the 10-day weather forecast.

“If the 10-day weather forecast shows temperatures below or close to freezing, snow can be made.”

• Entered into executive session to discuss personnel and property. Council completed a first reading to extend employees’ paid sick leave that expired on Dec. 31 to March 31.
