County, developmental disabilities board recognize disability awareness month

- By BOB TOMASZEWSKI Staff Writer

Although a quorum was not present — much like the March meeting in 2020 — the Auglaize County Board of Developmental Disabilities took time to observe National Developmental Disability Awareness Month. County Commissioner Doug Spencer read the proclamation and said county officials wanted to recognize all the great things that those with developmental disabilities do as well what the DD staff members do to assist their efforts. The proclamation notes the board serves more than 360 people.

“The most effective way to increase this awareness is to encourage active participation in community activities and the openness to acknowledge each individuals contribution,” Spencer read. Commissioners also offered their support for access to education, housing, employment and recreational activities.

DD Superintendent Renee Place said this year the board will honor 19 individuals on billboards in the county once they acquire a few more pictures. They are also distributing 115 copies of the children’s book “Our Friend Mikayla” to pre-kindergarten through second grade classes throughout Auglaize County. The book promotes awareness and acceptance of those with disabilities.

Place said the board’s strategic plan, an evolving document, has been updated to include more strategies for reaching goals, including outreach, and providing online resources.

Place said the staff developed an advocacy mantra:

“Empowering families to be advocates for their children is the first step in teaching children to be strong advocates for themselves.”
