St. Marys baseball beats Wapakoneta in WBL action

ST. MARYS — When chances come along, they can’t be wasted.

St. Marys was able to manufacture enough offense and use quality pitching to get a 5-2 win over rival Wapakoneta in Western Buckeye League baseball play on Tuesday at K.C. Geiger Park.

The Roughriders scored three runs in the third, then added some insurance in the later innings. Wapakoneta was able to get a big jolt early with a home run, but was held to one the rest of the way.

Ty Kiehl got the victory, pitching 5 2/3 innings. He allowed the two runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out four. Logan Hale completed the game with 1 1/3 innings of hitless ball, with one walk and two strikeouts.

Coach Adam Graves of St. Marys said Kiehl “did a great job holding them to two runs.” He noted that he did a good job of mixing fastballs and off speed pitches.

“It was a good overall effort,” Graves said, “The guys didn’t get complacent.”

Dylan Trogdlon had a triple and two RBIs. Adam Tobin and Joey Caldwell each had an RBI as well. Andrew Ibrahim had two hits, while Braedan Trogdlon had a hit and two walks.

Wapakoneta skipper Jason Brandt said that “we left too many men on base. We had some opportunities.” He added that “we have to understand the game better and get everybody on the same page.”

Braeden Goulet pitched 4 2/3 for the Redskins, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out five. Ryan Camper pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on a hit and two walks.

Landon Brandt had a solo home run in the third, and Cooper Talowsky had a double for the Redskins. Trevor Crow and Grant Bauer had the other hits.

Wapakoneta got runners on in its first at bat. Talowsky reached on an error. An infield fly by West put him on but eliminated Talowsky. Crow drew a walk, but St. Marys ended it with a force play at third.

The Roughriders were set down in order in their first chance at the plate.

Both pitchers worked quickly through the second, with a single by Aidan Eigenbrod making him the only one to reach base.

Brandt led off the third, and drove a 2-1 pitch from Kiehl over the fence in right to give the visitors the initial advantage. Talowsky and West would get walks with one out, but Kiehl got Crow looking and then a flyout.

Kiehl led off the bottom half by drawing a base on balls from his opposite number. Ibrahim bunted to the third-base side and beat it out for a hit. Braedan Trogdlon battled Goulet, fouling off several pitches before getting a walk to load the bases.

Tobin then popped a ball up, which was caught in foul ground behind first. Kiehl was able to tag up and score. The throw went sailing into the Riders dugout, and Ibrahim was given the next base, which made it 2-1.

Trogdlon then sent a ball in the same direction as Brandt’s blast. It didn’t go out, but resulted in a triple and RBI.

Goulet then got the next two batters to end the inning.

An infield single by Bauer and Camper being hit by a pitch put two on for the Redskins with one out. The chance went unused as the next two hitters were retired. St. Marys then left one on in the bottom half.

Talowsky started the Redskins off right in the fifth with a solid double to left-center. He moved to third on a wild pitch. A bloop single by Crow into shallow right was far enough to allow Talowsky to put a second run up. After a flyout, Kaden Siefring and Grant Bauer were both plunked, which loaded the bases. Kiehl escaped the jam by getting Camper to swing at the first pitch and pop up to short.

St. Marys also started its at-bat with a hit, as Braedan Trogdlon beat out an infield single to second. He advanced on a sac bunt and groundout, then came in on a single up the middle by Caldwell.

Goulet walked Hale, then was lifted for Camper. He issued a walk to Eigenbrod, which filled the bags for the Riders. Like Wapakoneta, they did not

add to their total, as Tanner Howell popped out to second.

Kiehl retired two batters then walked Talowsky. Graves put Hale in, who walked West. Hale then closed it down with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ibrahim singled to left and Braedan Trogdlon walked. Tobin got aboard as Wapakoneta forced out Trogdlon at second. The Redskins tried for the double play, but the throw went offline, with Ibrahim scoring to make it a three-run lead. A groundout ended the frame shortly thereafter.

Hale trotted out for the seventh. He got Garrett Siefring to fly to center, then Kaden Siefring to swing and miss at strike three. That brought up Bauer, whose fly ball was squeezed by Dylan Trogdlon to end the game.
