Redskins defeat Lady Riders

WAPAKONETA -The Wapkoneta softball team recorded a 7-1 win over St. Marys in a Western Buckeye League matchup on Tuesday at MercyHealt­h Field.

The Lady Redskins scored two in the first and one in the third, then added two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.

St. Marys got its run in in the fifth inning.

Rylie Jeanneret earned the win, pitching six innings. She allowed five hits and walked one, while getting eight strikeouts.

Allie Wilson pitched the seventh.

Karsyn McGlothen took the loss for St. Marys. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits and three walks. She put up seven strikeouts.

Taylor West and Wilson had doubles for Wapakoneta. Aryka Watt and Maddi Doseck had two hits each. Kaite Lisi drove in two runs, with Corrin Wilder, Carlie Schroeder, Tianna Thompson and Doseck getting one RBI each.

St. Marys had five hits on the day, with those coming from Renee Swiegart, Zoe Lininger, Elly Wedding, Kelsey Poppe and Morgan Hirschfeld.

After retiring St. Marys in the first, Wapakoneta got a one-out walk by Wilder. West then doubled to right, scoring Wilder. West then moved to third on the relay throw.

A single by Lisi up the middle brought West across before a strikeout ended the inning.

Lininger and Wedding got hits to start the second, After a strikeout, Lininiger was tagged out trying to score, and a groundout ended the inning.

Watt reached on an error to start the bottom half. She took second on a sacrifice bunt from Jeanneret, then scored on a hit by Doseck.

Neither side scored in the third, with St. Marys leaving one on and Wapakoneta two.

The Riders were retired in order in the fourth. In the bottom half, hits by Doseck and

Wilson put runners on second and third. A grounder back to McGlothen got an out, but also allowed Doseck to score.

Schroeder grounded to second, and Wilson used that to make it 5-0 in favor of the Lady Skins.

Poppe and Hirschfeld each singled to lead off the fifth, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Poppe then scored on a wild pitch and Hirschfeld went to third at the same time.

Kiley Tennant hit a liner to second, and Hirschfeld was doubled off. St. Marys got a walk to Emma Birt and a single by Swiegart. Jeanneret then faced McGlothen and retired her on a flyout to end the frame.

In the Redskins sixth, Wilder reached on an error, then a single by Schroeder and a walk to West loaded the bases.

Lisi reached on a bunt, with Wilder scoring, and the others moving up one base. Thompson’s grounder to third was the second out, but for the third time, an out produced a run for Wapakoneta, with Schroeder crossing the dish.

St. Marys then was retired in the seventh to end the contest.

Wapakoenta (2-0 WBL, 5-4) will travel to Van Wert on Friday, while St. Marys (1-2 WBL, 5-4 overall) will host Waynesfiel­d-Goshen on Thursday.
