Minster boys win sectional golf title

HARROD — The Minster boys golf team added a sectional championsh­ip to their 2021 results on Thursday.

The Division III Northwest tourney was played at Colonial Golf Course.

Minster finished with a team score of 321. Nathan Beair led with a round of 76, followed by Mitchell Bornhorst at 79, and Louis Magoto and Ray Purdy both shooting 83. The scores for Beair, Bornhorst and Purdy all were personal bests. Also in action was Jack Meyer with a score of 94.

Lincolnvie­w (336) and St. Henry (348) also qualified for the district tournament.

The top three players not on qualifying teams were Parker Judy of Lima CC, who had the low round of the tourney at 71 (35-36), Jack Gerker of St. John’s with 77 and Collin Feathers, also of the Blue Jays with 80.

St. John’s was fourth (352), followed by Marion Local (359), Parkway (360), Fort Recovery (368), New Bremen (368), Lima Central Catholic (395), Jefferson (398), New Knoxville (423), Crestview (432), and Spencervil­le (476).

For New Bremen, the team score was a season best. Individual scores were Andrew McNaughton (87), Blake Terpstra (89), Ben Wells (94) and Josh Bensman (98), along with Cole Hamberg (101).

The Rangers were led by Max Henschen (97), followed by Andrew Leffel (103), Jay Waterman (106), and James Albers (117). Joshua Peters finished with 149.

The Division III Northwest district tournament will be next Thursday at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green.

GIRLS TENNIS

WBL tournament plays opening rounds

ELIDA — The first day of action for the Western Buckeye Legaue girls tennis tournament was held Thursday morning at Elida.

At first singles, Charley Spencer of St. Marys defeated Kenton’s Emma Mulligan 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. She then lost to Bath’s Elena Oliver 6-2, 6-3.

At second singles, St. Marys’ Madeline White lost 6-0, 6-0 to Alyse Balbaugh of OttawaGlan­dorf.

At third singles,

Brooke Fricke of the Lady Riders lost to Van Wert’s Mandy Burenga 6-1, 6-1.

In the first doubles bracket, Jodi Perry and Liz Brown lost to Wapakoneta’s Bailey Barrett and Elisabeth Good, 6-2, 7-5.

At second doubles, Cora Rable and Aaliyah Newland of St. Marys lost to Shawnee’s Taylor Stumbaugh and Jenova DeBrosse, 6-1, 6-1.

The tournament will conclude on Saturday.

Spencer will play for fifth place after defeating Celina’s Amy Hartings 8-5 in a pro set. She will face Van Wert’s

Grace Lott.

Fricke won 8-4 over Kenton’s Lilly Carmean and will face Kayliann Howell of Celina for fifth place.

Perry and Brown defeated Van Wert’s Piper Pierce and Livvi Quillen 8-4. They will take on Bath’s Chloe Rieman and Rachel Wilcox for fifth place.

Rable and Newland lost 8-1 to Defiance’s Maria Chavez and Marissa Martinez. They will play for seventh place against a pair from Van Wert.
