The St. Marys boys soccer team improved their record to 10-3 on the season following a 3-0 victory over the Fort Jennings Musketeers in non-league action. Brennan Brown tallied two of St. Marys’ three goals and added an assist on the other to Zack Wilker, who scored his sixth goal of the campaign. St. Marys goalkeeper Luke Leffel helped secure his teams’ seventh shutout of the year with several of his 55 saves on the season.

25 Years Ago (1996)

The St. Marys Roughrider­s hosted their rivals from across the lake in Western Buckeye League play and edged the Celina Bulldogs in doubleover­time by a final of 33-27. Mike Hirschfeld got the scoring underway for the ‘Riders with a three-yard run in the first period, but a pair of Celina scores gave the visitors a 13-7 command at halftime. Hirschfeld struck again in the third period, but a missed PAT and another Celina touchdown gave the Bulldogs a 20-13 edge heading into the fourth quarter. Another Hirschfeld touchdown run in the final stanza eventually pushed the game into overtime, where Celina scored first, but the home team responded with Hirschfeld’s fourth touchdown of the game, which resulted in a 27-all score. St. Marys opened the second overtime with a 20-yard touchdown run by Jason Clark, and soon the defense did their part in stopping Celina and preserving the victory.

50 Years Ago (1971)

The St. Marys Roughrider­s notched their fourth victory of the season and held on to their lead in the Western Buckeye League race with a 2014 triumph over the Kenton Wildcats. The Roughrider­s hit paydirt first in the opening period with an 8-yard touchdown scamper by Bob Kantner and conversion from Craig Huwer. Kenton scored a few minutes later to pull within two points, but a pair of touchdown runs from Huwer in the second stanza helped push his team in command 20-6 at intermissi­on. The Wildcats managed to score once in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as St. Marys moved on with the sixpoint victory.
