Leona S. Peterman, 100

Leona Sarah Peterman, 100, most recently of Lancaster, Ohio, and formerly of St. Marys, died at 12:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, 2021 at Main Street Terrace Care Center in Lancaster.

She was born Jan. 7, 1921 in Auglaize County to Lewis and Hannah (Neuman) Rodeheffer.

In 1941, she married Army S/ Sgt. Orvil E. Sweigart, who was killed in action in 1944 during World War II.

Then, on May 2, 1947 she married Dale W. Peterman, who died May 11, 1999. From this union, two daughters were born: Linda and Carol.

She is survived by: her daughter Linda Millington of Lancaster; two grandchild­ren: Michelle (John) Hill of Otway, Ohio and Kevin (Jennifer) Kincaid of Sunbury, Ohio and four great-grandchild­ren: Ryan Hill, Tyler Hill, Kaleb (Emma) Kincaid and Jacob Kincaid

She was preceded in death by: her daughter and son-in-law Carol and Larry Cathcart; parents Lewis and Hannah Rodeheffer; first husband Orvil Sweigart; second husband Dale Peterman and siblings: Felix, Le Roy, Earl Rodeheffer and Esther Paul

She graduated from New Knoxville High School and became a licensed beautician.

She owned the Carol Kay Beauty Shop in St. Marys for a number of years. Later, she retired from the St. Marys City Schools, where she worked as a cafeteria cook. In addition, you could always find her assisting her husband, Dale, in the operation of the Peterman Carry Out and Ice Co. in downtown St. Marys.

She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Marys, and participat­ed in the women’s guild and Rebekah’s circle.

Her favorite pastimes included gardening, reading, sewing and creating many crocheting and knitting projects, as well as being a skilled pianist.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, at Miller Funeral Home 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West) in St. Marys, with a funeral service at 3 p.m. The Rev. Rhonda Hainer will officiate the services.

Burial will follow at the Pilger Ruhe Cemetery in New Knoxville.

Memorial contributi­ons may be directed to St. Paul’s UCC endowment fund.

The family of Leona Peterman wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciati­on to the staff of the Main Street Terrace Care Center for the tremendous care that she received during her time at the facility.
