John Bubp, 62, is running for re-election because of his love of the city, of which he has been a lifelong resident. He and his wife Amy have two children and two grandsons.

Bubp retired in July 2020 after 32 years at the Honda of America Anna Engine Plant working in supplied parts quality. He traveled across the world to Honda's different suppliers to ensure quality parts were being manufactured. He has a bachelor of science in marketing.

When asked what qualified him for the position, Bubp said he is a good problem solver and listener who enjoys helping his constituents with their concerns about the city. His 10 years of experience on council has allowed him to understand the position. He also serves on the city's finance, parks and playgrounds, and electrical committees.

He said he wants to see the city grow and prosper, for citizens to enjoy living there and to ensure there is proper infrastructure in place to make living in the city enjoyable.

"I am here as a council member to do what is right for the majority of St. Marians. I represent and report to the citizens of the first ward of St. Marys," Bubp said.

If re-elected, Bubp hopes to continue overseeing projects such as electrical grid upgrades, water quality projects and the planned pedestrian bridge across U.S. 33 to the middle/high school campus.

The city is implementing a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to help supervisors keep an eye on where outages are, allowing them to respond faster.

Bubp also said the Miami Erie canal is an asset to the community, but the recent odor issues were not pleasant for anyone. A wetland treatment train, funded by a $3.5 million H2Ohio grant, could help the city clean its canal water, just as treatment trains are used to clean Grand Lake's tributaries, Bubp said. City administrators are also working with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on mandated wastewater system improvements, which Bubp said could improve the city's system during heavy rainfall.
