Store, scouts collecting goods to donate to vets

- By SKYLER MITCHELL Staff Writer

Hudson Jewelers, in conjunction with St. Marys Cub Scout Pack 36, is helping collect donations to give to soldiers and veterans at their store during business hours.

Erik and Nancy Mauter, the forerunners of the business, are assisting the pack with donations they gather from the community. With St. Marys having a big history between the Cub Scouts and itself, the couple are glad to help in one of its pursuits.

“Part of the program is to give back to the community and community service hours and that stuff,” Erik stated. The Cub Scouts offers many different programs in their organization, with plenty of ways to help being offered. “We just want to make sure that we’re teaching the kids to do programs throughout the year.”

The organization is collecting items for soldiers and veterans this month due to Veterans Day fast approaching, with Hudson Jewelers planning on giving what they can get to the pack. Erik and Nancy make sure to regularly volunteer with local programs, so this was a good fit for them.

“The store has been around for so long so we that we volunteer as much as possible because you got to give back to the community,” Erik said about their involvement. “This is just part of our life. If somebody needs some help, we see what we can do and help out.”

The project is a new one for the Cub Scout group itself, unlike some of the food drive’s and other projects they’ve participated in. Projects are usually shifted around so the kids can learn different skills or lessons within their time in the scouts. The main thing is to make sure they understand what’s being taught so they can use it later in life.

The couple have deep ties with St. Marys as well as the local scout troops. Growing up in the city and with their kids being in the packs, they’re happy to get involved and help all the kids in it, especially if it gives them pertinent skills.

“You want to be involved as much

as possible with your kids,” Erik explained. He is proud of the work he and Nancy have done and the reach it’s

had over the years. “If it helps out some other kids, that’s a bonus too.”

Hudson Jewelers are looking to collect everything by Nov. 16 and they’re able to take a little bit of everything if they can. Things such as toiletries, games and even socks will be sent to those in the service.

“Stuff like beef jerky, Slim Jims, stuff that is non-perishable that we can send to them,” said Erik. While it is a good idea to ask to make sure what it is appropriate to send. “We’re going to try our best and see what we can do.”
