Northwest Ohio school board member is OSBA president-elect

COLUMBUS — The Ohio School Boards Associatio­n Delegate Assembly has elected Christine Varwig as the associatio­n’s 2022 president-elect. Varwig serves on the Toledo City Schools Board of Education.

She was elected Nov. 8 during the Annual Business Meeting of the OSBA DelegateAs­sembly.

The delegates meet each year at the Capital Conference, the associatio­n’s state convention that draws thousands of school board members, administra­tors and other education leaders to Columbus.

Varwig will take over as OSBA president in 2023, following her term as president-elect.

The president-elect’s duties include serving on OSBA’s Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, and chairing the Legislativ­e Platform Committee and Federal Relations Network.

Varwig was first elected to the Toledo City Schools Board of Education in 2013. The eightyear board member currently is serving as board president following a term as vice president in 2020. She also served as board president in 2017 and vice president in 2016 and 2015.

She is a member of the OSBA Northwest Region Executive Committee and was Northwest Region president in 2019. She also has served on the associatio­n’s Urban Network.

In her school district, Varwig has served on many committees and was instrument­al in creating programs, such as Parent University and Student Voice, and fine arts festivals to showcase young artists and performers. She also is involved with the Toledo Public Schools Foundation, which provides scholarshi­ps and grants for students and teachers.

Varwig graduated from Toledo City Schools’ E.L. Bowsher High School. She and her husband, Randy, and daughter, Caitlyn, are proud products of the district, where her daughter is a teacher’s aide and her son-in-law, Dane, a special education teacher.

Varwig and her husband have been married for 32 years and have three grandchild­ren.
