Cardinals earn win over Anna Saturday

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen earned its second win of the season on Saturday as they defeated Anna 83-56 in nonleague boys basketball.

The Cardinals scored over 20 points in the each of the first three quarters.

Reece Busse had 20 points for the Cardinals, and Nick Alig scored 17. Nathan Rindler and David Homan added 12 points each.

For the Rockets, Finkenbine had 16 points and Ambos scored 12.

Alig had the bulk of the scoring in the first quarter, as he connected on five 3-pointers. Trevor Bergman also hit from long range, while Busse and Homan each made one shot, and Rindler had two free throws. Anna managed 17 points, but still trailed by seven.

The second period saw Busse heat up with 11 points. Bergman (3-pointer), Rindler (four), Dylan Bambauer and Homan contribute­d to the total as well. At the break, the Cardinals led 46-30.

New Bremen stayed hot after the break with 26 points in the third. Aaron Thieman made a 3. Busse, Rindler and Homan each had two baskets, with one apiece from Grant Wilker and Alig. The rest of the points came on free throws by Homan, Rindler and Busse. That put them ahead 72-45.

Each team scored 11 in the final quarter as the Cardinals rolled to the victory. Baskets came from Wilker, Busse, Ben Wells, Tate Roetgerman and Colten Muether for New Bremen.

New Bremen moves to 2-0 on the year, and Anna is now 1-1.

The Cardinals will return to action on Friday when they travel to Celina, then visit St. Marys on Saturday afternoon.

GIRLS BASKETBALL New Knoxville 41, Botkins 25

BOTKINS — The New Knoxville girls opened the season on Saturday morning with a win over host Botkins in nonleague play.

Ellie Gabel scored 15 points for the Lady Rangers, and Avery Henschen had 13.

For Botkins, Boston Paul had nine and Carmen Heuker scored seven.

Each team scored 10 points in the opening

quarter. Henschen had a basket and two free throws, and Gabel made two 3-pointers.

In the second, New Knoxville scored 12 and held the Lady Trojans to two free throws, taking a 22-12 lead at the break. Haley Fledderjoh­ann scored eight points for the Rangers, with two 3-pointers. Henschen made the other two baskets.

The third was low scoring, with seven for New Knoxville and

Botkins again just getting two. Rebecca Leffel made a shot from long range, with Henschen and Gabel connecting once each.

The fourth was balanced as New Knoxville preserved the lead. Gabel made three shots and a free throw. Henschen had a basket and foul shot, and Melisa Waterman made two free throws as well.

New Knoxville (1-0) will travel to Marion Local on Thursday for the first league game with JV starting at 6 p.m.
