Minster outslugs St. Henry for league victory on road

From staff reports MINSTER — Minster outlasted St. Henry 15-13 in a high-scoring Midwest Athletic Conference softball matchup on Tuesday.

Other than the top of the second and both halves of the fifth, runs were scored by each side in every other at-bat. There were a a total of 38 hits in the game -- 21 for the Lady Redskins and 17 by Minster.

Hannah Oldiges was the ultimate hero, hitting the game-ending home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Mikaela Hoskins had two home runs, driving in six runs.. Emma Goubeaux homered and doubled. Savanah Bergman hit a triple and double. Bergman, Addi Inskeep, Kaycie Albers and Goubeaux all had three hits each.

Pitching for Minster were Gabrielle Wehrman, Hoskins and Brooklyn Osterloh.

Wehrman pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing three runs on four hits.

Hoskins worked 3 2/3, giving up five runs on 10 hits and one walk and was the winning pitcher.

Osterloh pitched 2 2/3, with five runs surrendere­d on seven hits. The three combined for six strikeouts.

St. Henry scored three runs in the first. Bergman doubled and scored in the bottom half.

Three hits in the second scored Goubeaux.

Each team scored twice in the third. Minster’s run came on a tworun homer by Goubeaux to center after Oldiges was hit by a pitch. That made it 5-4 St. Henry after three.

Three singles and a doubles added two runs for St. Henry. Bergman tripled in the bottom half, Lyndi Hemmelgarn walked, then Inskeep singled. Two Redskins errors allowed Minster to tie it at 7.

Goubeaux was the only baserunner for either side in the fifth, with a double.

St. Henry then broke loose for five runs in the top of the sixth with two doubles and a pair of two-run homers.

Minster got three runs on a round-tripper by Hoskins after Hemmlegarn walked and Inskeep singled. That left the Wildcats down by two, 12-10.

St. Henry got one more run in the top of the seventh on a single, intentiona­l walk, and another single.

Minster’s first two hitters were retired. Hemmelgarn singled to left, then Inskeep drove a pitch to center to bring her around. Hoskins took one pitch before sending it over the fence in center and tying the game at 13.

Albers singled on the first pitch thrown to her, with Emma Linn going in to run. Two pitches later, Oldiges sent the Wildcats home with a win on a drive to left.

Versailles 9, New Bremen 0

VERSAILLES — Versailles defeated visiting New Bremen in MAC play Tuesday.

Alayna Ross suffered the loss, allowing 12 hits and three walks. She struck out five as she went the distance.

Ross had two hits for the Lady Cardinals, with one each by Allison Hays, Mackenzie Bornhorst and Kyla Stachler.

In the first inning, Ross doubled and Ella Pape walked with two outs before a strikeout ended the scoring threat.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third. Versailles got a walk, then three straight hits, two of them doubles to take a 2-0 lead. A fielder’s choice and a groundout produced two more runs.

They got two more in the fourth on a tworun homer by winning pitcher Tara Fritscher, and one in the fifth.

New Bremen had a single in the second, a walk in the third and fourth, and a single in the fifth.

Ross hit a double in the sixth, but was left on base. Versailles scored its final three runs in the bottom half.

Stachler hit a one-out double in the seventh, with the other three batters retired.
