Board honors teams, clubs at its meeting
The St. Marys Board of Education met on Wednesday and honored three student groups for their recent achievements and approved an important resolution for the school.
The board recognized the efforts of three student teams Wednesday night for their placement in certain competitions this year. One of the three was the Memorial High School (MHS) Symphonic Band, which earned the superior rating at the Ohio Music Educators Association District 12 Large Group Adjudication.
“I’m very proud of everyone up here and as well as the rest of the Symphonic Band that couldn’t make it tonight,” said Band Director Riley Robey. The achievement is a big one for the band and is something that the band hadn’t accomplished since 1996. “It was incredible what they were able to go through.”
The Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus and Symphonic Choir also raced a superior rating at the OMEA Large Group
District Contest. The Women’s Chorus also received a superior rating in the Class C OMEA Large Group State Contest for their efforts as well.
“They also competed against many of the area’s most talented students,” said Superintendent Bill Ruane while giving the resolution to the groups in question. He stated that they competed against many talented students and that he was proud of them for distinguishing themselves among the
There was also significant achievements from the school’s swim and dive teams these past few weeks. The teams received recognition for their WBL wins and their several have qualified for state as well, Ruane giving praise to the team for their individual and group accomplishments.
“These swimmers were in Florida last month, so we couldn’t commend them right after for their swim season,” said Ruane. “We do appreciate the parents and children’s support
throughout the year and also for tonight.”
The board thanked the students for their efforts during the past school year and congratulated them for having it pay off in the end. They also extended congratulations and gratitude to the students parents for their part in helping the students get to this point as well.
After congratulations were concluded, the board moved on to other business concerning legislation, with their focus involving the renewal of an income tax. The
resolution dealt with the Existing Income Tax started on Nov. 6, 2018, and the deadline for the last year’s collection being 2023.
The resolution was approved, with its approval meaning that the income tax was deemed necessary for providing funds for current operating expenses. The treasurer will send a copy of the resolution to tax commissioner no later than July 29, 2022.
In other news, the board also read and voted on motions brought to their attention. One
notable recommendation include designating around 50 students as honors seniors for maintaining a 3.594 grade point average and above, as recommended by MHS Principal Jon Burke. Another involved the around accepting donations from around 60 organizations to the 2022 after prom event, as well as the $10,536.72 in donations from various organizations that went to various programs in the school.
The summer feeding program also was approved
for a supplemental contract at $5,000, with Nicole Rasmussen aiming to use them for all duties related to it. The board also approved for $25,885 to be set aside for The Courtsmiths for the repair of the high schools tennis courts.
The meeting ended with the board thanking the staff present for their time during the school year, with sentiments shared by the staff themselves. Plans for summer break and the 2022-2023 school year are currently underway at this time.
