Riders compete at regional track

PIQUA — Despite weather that was not the best, the first day of the Division II regional track and field meet was held Thursday at Piqua.

Finals were held in the boys long jump and discus, and the girls shot put and high jump.

The finals were also run for the 4x800 meter relays for both boys and girls. The rest of the competitio­n will be conducted today.

BOYS TRACK

Senior Brandon Bowers of St. Marys advanced to the finals of the 110 meter hurdles. He had the second fastest qualifying time at 15.55 seconds.

He finished 10th in the 300m hurdles (42.64).

In the 4x800m relay, Van Wert took first place with a time of 8:06.28. Running second through fourth to earn spots at next weekend’s state meet were West Liberty-Salem (8:07.14); Mariemont (8:07.60) and Greeneview (8:09.32).

GIRLS TRACK

Syerra Greber, a sophomore, advanced to the finals of both the 100 and 200 meter dash.

In the 100, she ran a heat time of 13.08 seconds, which was seventh.

She was sixth-best in the 200, with a time of 26.58.

She will run in the finals today, along with Ellen Schloemer and Maria Jutte in the 800 meters.

The Lady Riders 4x400m relay team finished 13th with a time of 4:16.75.

In the 4x800m, the top four finishers were Oakwood (9:22.11); Indian Hill (9:25.69); Waynesvill­e (9:31.99) and Ottawa-Glandorf (9:33.23). Celina finished sixth and Defiance was 10th.

GIRLS FIELD

Sophomore Ella Jacobs placed fifth in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5 feet, 1 inch.

The four ahead of her were Penelope Webb, Wyoming (5-6); Brooke Haywood, Chaminade Julienne (5-3); Tabbi Courts, Bethel Tate (52) and Isabel Henderson, Ben Logan (5-1).

Celina’s Amelia Lutz won the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 8 inches. Lyza Forson of Urbana (37-1 1/2); Tristan Eitniear, Swanton (36-9 3/4) and Lexi Alspaugh of Bryan (35-10) were the next three finishers.

Taking fifth place was junior Kaci Anthony of St. Marys (34-10).

BOYS FIELD

In the long jump competitio­n, Bowers finished 10th, with a jump of 20 feet, 7 inches.

The state qualifiers were Logan Snyder, West Liberty-Salem (21-7 1/2); Blake Brumbaugh, Milton Union (21-7); Antwan Peek, Indian Hill (21-2 1/2); and Jonas Tester, Wauseon

(21-1/4).

For the discus, state qualifiers were Taran Tyo of Versailles, who won the event at 17810; Joel Allen, Wyoming (154-2); Xavier Griffiths, Bath (151-10); and Lucas Prichard, also of Bath (147-9).

The field events schedule for today includes the boys high jump and shot put, the girls long jump and discus, and both boys and girls’ pole vault. Competitio­n gets under way at 11 a.m.

The track events are set to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the 100/110m hurdles, followed by the 100m dash, 4x200 relay, 1600m, 4x100 relay, 400m, 300m hurdles, 800m, 200m, 3200m and 4x400m relay.

The state meet will be held next Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
