In neighborho­od Midwest Athletic Conference boys basketball action, the New Bremen Cardinals upended the New Knoxville Rangers by a final of 60-48. The win marked the ninth straight of the season for the Cardinals as they stayed one game behind St. Henry in the race for the MAC title. New Bremen led 12-4 after one quarter and 29-13 at halftime. They added five more points to their cushion in the third quarter and although the Rangers outscored them 19-9 in the closing period, it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals rolled to the 12-point victory and improved to 13-2 on the year. Carson Manger and Ben Homan led the Cardinals with 20 and ten points respective­ly, along with 10 rebounds apiece. The Rangers, meanwhile, were paced in the scoring column by Adam Howe with 11 counters and Jake Allen with ten as they slipped to 6-8 on the year and 1-4 in conference play.

25 Years Ago (1998)

The St. Marys’ boys basketball team improved to 3-9 on the season and 3-2 in the Western Buckeye League following their 59-56 victory over the Bath Wildcats. Following a 15-all score following the first quarter, the ‘Riders found themselves down by a point at halftime and three points after the third quarter, before rallying and posting a three-point triumph. Andy Slone finished the evening with a game-high 17 points, and was joined in double-digits by Wes Clark with 11 and Pete Andreoni with 10 in the conference victory.

50 Years Ago

(1973)

The New Bremen boys basketball team picked up their eighth win of the season after downing the Bradford Railroader­s by a final of 79-36. The Cardinals took a 1711 edge at the end of the first quarter and pulled ahead 37-19 at halftime. They really opened things up in the second half by outscoring Bradford 42-17 to roll to the easy win. Lonnie Nedderman led New Bremen with 21 points in the win, while Craig Schnelle added 16 points and Lynn Koenig chipped in ten counters in the battle.
