Lady Roughriders fall to Kenton

- By MIKE FRANK Sports Writer

The home finale had a dramatic, but disappointing, ending.

The St. Marys girls basketball team made a late run, but came up just short in a 44-42 loss to Kenton on Thursday at the Horseshoe.

The Lady Roughriders were ahead after one, but Kenton found a groove in the second and led by one at the half.

Down by five entering the fourth, the Roughriders continued to fight and briefly took the lead with 1:22 to play. But Kenton answered right away, then held on for the win.

Coach Jon Burke said, “Our defense puts in position to win. We need to make layups and free throws.”

He added that “we settled for threes. We need to get the ball in the paint more.”

The Lady Riders made just 8 of 24 (33 percent) from the foul line, while Kenton was 14 of 20 (70 percent).

Reese Rable had 17 points and Morgan Hesse 11, with nine by Ella Jacobs for St. Marys (5-2 WBL, 118).

Kenton was led by Tatum Miller with 16. Miller was injured with five minutes left and did not return to action.

Rable got the Lady Roughriders out of the gate with three connections from long distance for a 9-0 lead. That resulted in a timeout by Kenton with just over three minutes gone by.

Miller then made her presence on the post felt, scoring three straight, then another after a jumper by Jacobs.

Hesse closed out the period’s scoring with a basket, then got a steal and took it all the way. That made it 15-8 for the hosts.

Cadence Hirschfeld made one free throw, and Miller made two in the early part of the second quarter.

After a three-point play by Sadie Larrabee, Rable and Kenton’s Ali Harpel exchanged treys.

Jacobs battled her way to a score, foul, and free throw with just under two minutes to go, making it 22-16.

Kenton, however, got a three by Kinze Sprang, then four free throws to seize the edge at the break.

Miller had the initial score for the Lady Wildcats. St. Marys regained the lead with a basket by Hesse and free throws by Cora and Reese Rable. Kenton answered with a 7-0 run.

Hesse scored for the Riders, but Gabi Wetherill was able to beat the buzzer and make it 34-29.

A three by Olivia Nolting extend Kenton’s lead.

Jacobs made two shots from the line with 5:24 to go to keep St. Marys in range.

On the ensuing possession, Miller was injured during a scramble for a loose ball. She was helped up, and was able to walk off the court. She later returned to the bench, but did not come back in.

Jacobs made a reverse layup, and Hesse hit a free throw, cutting it to five.

Kenton got one foul shot. A pass by Reagan Allemeier led to a score by Hesse.

Hesse then shot a nice pass along the baseline to Cora Rable, who fed it to her sister. She splashed it for three to make it 40-39.

Allemeier then lined up and fired from deep to put the Riders ahead.

Kenton sophomore Kyle Bostater let fly and hit with 1:02 to go.

Hesse was fouled with 41 seconds to go, but missed both shots. Jacobs got the rebound, but St. Marys was denied again.

Harpel made one of two with 20 seconds left.

St. Marys ran the clock down to five seconds and called time.

The ball came in and went down low to Hesse. Her effort hit off the side of the rim, and time expired before another shot could be taken.
